Description	:	BOONVILLE, NC ~ On October 27, 2009, at 12:30 a.m., Laura Marie Perkins Hicks, age 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior. She had lived at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin, NC for five years. Marie, born January 3, 1919 in Surry County, NC, was the oldest daughter of seven children born to Charlie T. and Lillie Hemmings Perkins in the Copeland Community of Surry County. She had lived at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin, NC for five years. Marie, born January 3, 1919 in Surry County, NC, was the oldest daughter of seven children born to Charlie T. and Lillie Hemmings Perkins in the Copeland Community of Surry County. Marie's mother, Lillie, died when Marie's youngest sister was 9 months old. Marie helped her father raise her six brothers and sisters. She was valedictorian of her graduating class of 1935. Marie is survived by her brother, Charles Perkins, and a sister, Frances P. Ward. Her deceased siblings are John Perkins, June Moore, Lois Howerton and Mamie Hill. After graduation from Copeland High School, Marie took business courses in Charlotte, NC and worked at T.L. Hayes in Boonville, then at the U.S. Weather Bureau in Washington D.C. during World War II. She worked at Sunbeam Corporation in Elkin, NC and then at Yadkinville Elementary School until she reached the age of 83. She was married to Daniel Watson Hicks, who passed away in 1956 at the age of 35, before their youngest child was born. Marie is survived by her children: Laura H. (the late Joel) Carlyle of Yadkinville, NC, Rueleen H. (Ed) Lavergne of Stone Mountain, Ga., Clara H. (Fred) Weeden of Raleigh, Dorothy H. (Ed) Carter of Yadkinville, David Hicks, who passed away as an infant, Lydia H. (Dennis) McCollum of East Bend, Daniel Watson Hicks II and wife, Scarlette of Yadkinville, Brenda H. (Hugh) Brown, Boonville; 13 grandchildren: Amy Carlyle LaRose, Ted Kapsch, Rachel (Jerame) York, Ben Kapsch, Heather Weeden, Sarah Weeden, Matt (Csilla) Dunn, Melanie Baity, Jennifer (Sam) Luster, Jordan and Blake Hicks, Charlotte and Kala Brown; two step-grandchildren: Angela Moore, Aaron Carter; seven great-grandchildren: Eric Baity, Jacob and Zackary Dunn, Jerame & Ryan York, Kaitlyn and Kendall Luster. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Her funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 30, 2009, at Boonville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Boaz, Rev. Perry Link, and Rev. Andy Lambert officiating. She will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the North Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to either: Boonville Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 429, Boonville, NC 27011; or to Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 1267, Yadkinville, NC 27055.
