Laurel Faye McElhany was born on March 14, 1939, in Clear Lake, SD, to George & Luella Brugman. She graduated from Hazel High School in 1957. Laurel was united in marriage to Paul McElhany, Jr., at Kellerton United Methodist Church, on November 3, 1957. They made their home in Watertown where Laurel worked at the Public Opinion and Paul was a mechanic. In 1967, Laurel and Paul purchased the family farm where they farmed and raised their 3 children, Carmen, Tyler and Clark, for 30 years. In 1997, they sold the farm, retired, and moved back to Watertown. Laurel loved living on the farm and being a farm wife. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking, and taking care of the family and home. She rarely missed bringing a lunch to Paul when he was working the field. Mrs. McElhany was a member of Ninth Avenue Methodist and First United Methodist Churches. She received multiple honors for her membership with the church, including the highest honor given from the United Methodist Women, Jewel of a Woman. Laurel was very active in 4-H. She was a long-time leader for two 4H clubs. She also started the 4H Clovers, who cleaned up the neglected Kampeska Cemetery which continues to be cared for today. She was also influential in the creation of Peppy Pals, a 4H program focusing on children with Special Needs. Three times, Laurel received an award for winning the most 1st place food entries at the Watertown Winter Farm Show. Laurel and Paul traveled to Washington DC to learn about starting a Special Olympic chapter in Watertown. They were instrumental in starting the local Watertown Area Special Olympics (WASO) that exists today. She was President of WASO for approximately 15 years and stayed active for several more years. Laurel was a member of Chattering Chicks, Extension Club, and she and Paul loved to play cards with the neighbors, being members of a Pinochle Club for over 12 years. Laurel loved spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. Laurel is survived by her husband Paul, 1 daughter, Carmen Lane (Bob) of Sioux Falls, SD, and 2 sons, Tyler McElhany, and Clark McElhany, both of Watertown, SD, 4 Grandchildren and 2 Great-Grandchildren. Preceding Laurel in death are her parents, George and Luella Brugman, Mother and Father In-law, Paul Sr and Ellene McElhany, 2 brothers, Don and Elwood Brugman, and 1 Grandson, Logan McElhany, 2 nephews and 1 niece.
