Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of arrangements. He was born Oct. 5, 1914, to Harry and Gertrude (Allbee) Strine on a farm north of Harvard. He lived there with his parents, a brother and two sisters until his father died in 1923. The family then moved into Harvard, where Laurence attended school and graduated from high school in 1932. He moved to Minden in 1932 to work for Warp Publishing Co. and worked the big presses for 43 years. In 1975, when the publishing company closed, Laurence opened a commercial printing job shop with a partner and retired from this in 1983. In August 1942, he married Ione Taylor of Minden. They were both very active in their church, First Christian Church of Minden. They helped with the construction of the current building, taught Sunday school and worked with youth groups. Laurence started singing in the church choir in 1934 and continued for over 80 years. He served in various leadership positions in the church. Laurence and Ione had two daughters, and he was very involved in their activities, helping with 4-H fair projects, attending school events, church family camp, taking the family on picnics, cookouts and cross-country vacations. He was engaged in many community activities including being a Boy Scoutmaster and keeping score at home boys basketball games for 25 years. He was on the boards of Child Savings Institute, Bethany Home and Bethany Home Foundation. Music was an important part of his life. In addition to the church choir he was a member of the Minden Men’s Chorus, Exultation Singers and Mixed Chorus. He sang for weddings, funerals and church services, in trios, duets, solo and in large groups. He helped lead the sing-along at Bethany Home nursing unit for several years. After retirement, Laurence took up baking as a hobby. He became an expert in cinnamon rolls and baked many dozens for birthdays, coffees and surprise treats for friends and neighbors. He was adventurous in his baking and tried many new recipes. He enjoyed gardening and tending his lawn. Laurence and Ione enjoyed many trips around the country including New York, Washington, D.C., and twice to Hawaii. He continued friendships with people they met on these trips. In 2011 Laurence and Ione moved to Bethany Home. He was a friend to residents and staff. Survivors include his wife, Ione Taylor Strine; two daughters, Ann Strine and husband Clyde Cross and Trudy Strine Hoffman and husband Richard; two grandsons, John Hoffman and Allen Hoffman and wife Daffney; three great-grandchildren, Aubree, A.J. and Cooper Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
