Description	:	Lawrence P. Officer, 81, first white child born on the Shields river, and early day Sweet Grass county rancher, died Friday morning in a Livingston hospital, following a short illness. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in the First Methodist church in Livingston and the body was brought to Mountain View cemetery in Big Timber for interment. Mr. Officer's five sons and a son-in-law, Fred White Jr., were pallbearers. Mr. Officer was born June 11, 1883, on the Shields river at the Officer homestead, now the Bill Keyes ranch. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Officer crossed the plains from Missouri in a covered wagon in 1879, settling in Bozeman before homesteading on the Shields. Later the family, lived for many years at Hunters Hot Springs where they operated a store and post office. Mr. Officer attended school at Hunters and later attended Montana State college. In 1904 he filed on a homestead eight miles west of Big Timber, on the north side of the Yellowstone. The place is now owned by Olaf Holland. He was married to Juanita M. Kenney June 27, 1908, in Livingston. Mr. Officer was a member of the Methodist church, the Park County Pioneer Society, and was vice president of the Hunters- Springdale Historical Society. Survivors include his widow; five sons, W, Maxwell Officer of Tacoma, Wash., Larry J. Officer of Phoenix, Ariz., Daniel R. Officer of Livingston, Kenneth D. Officer of Visalia, Calif., and J. Ward Officer of Midwest, Wyo.; one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Beth) White Jr. of Deer Lodge; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. One son, Gene, preceded him in death.
