Description	:	Laurence William Liddle, 84, of Plainfield, passed away on December 14, 2015, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa of natural causes. Laurence was born August 25, 1931, at a home in Douglas Township in Bremer County, Iowa. He was the son of Guy E. and Dorothy M. (Brader) Liddle. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church Western Douglas and was a member until his death. Read More	Laurence William Liddle, 84, of Plainfield, passed away on December 14, 2015, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, Iowa of natural causes. Laurence was born August 25, 1931, at a home in Douglas Township in Bremer County, Iowa. He was the son of Guy E. and Dorothy M. (Brader) Liddle. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church Western Douglas and was a member until his death. He attended country school in Douglas Township and graduated with top honors of the eighth grade. He never attended high school. Laurence worked for area farmers. In 1950, he started a farming partnership with his dad on a farm in Douglas Township which is now located at 1665 120th Street, Plainfield. On October 7, 1951, he married Elizabeth Schrage and continued to live and farm there. Later in 1953 they moved to a new farm which is now 1196 Hilton Avenue, Plainfield, where they lived until 1977. Through those years they raised a family of five children. In 1977, they moved into the town of Plainfield. Laurence in his early life of marriage, he loved to fish, hunt and trap. In the early 1960's, he started to bury rocks and stumps for local farmers with a small John Deere Crawler loader. Then in the fall of 1965, after waiting for a tile contractor to tile on their farm and was told the contractor could not make it, Laurence purchased a used Vermeer tiling machine and learned how to install clay tile. This occupation continued until 1995 when Laurence retired. Laurence also stayed very busy living in Plainfield, being on the City Council and helping out wherever he could. In 1985, he purchased an old lumber yard and turned it into a supper club and dance hall and called it the 2X4. He later rented the building out and then it was sold. He also had a Laundromat in town as well. Laurence always had an interest for toys and after he retired in 1995 he bought an old store on Main Street in Plainfield and opened a new business called Plainfield Toys. Laurence, with the help of his wife Elizabeth, ran the store until her death in April of 2011. Laurence sold the store and then moved into Linden Place in Waverly in the fall of 2012. After falling and getting hurt, Laurence moved to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community and stayed there until his passing. Laurence is survived by five children; Patsy Ebert of Fort Collins, Colorado, Steven (Deb) Liddle of Meriden, Iowa, Randy (Dee) Liddle of Plainfield, Iowa, Suzanne Poole of Maricopa, Arizona, and Timothy (Wendy) Liddle of Nashua, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law; Ellen Liddle of New Hampton and Genevieve Schrage of Waverly, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and four brothers; Paul, Owen, Leonard and Wendall. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church Western Douglas with Pastor Kim Thacker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2015, at the Funeral Home in Waverly and for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church Western Douglas.
