Description	:	LaVere Albert Beam, 79, died July 4, 1997 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from a stroke suffered during a family reunion in that city on June 15. He was born August 11, 1917 in a sod house in the Kowanda area on the tableland south of Oshkosh. He was born August 11, 1917 in a sod house in the Kowanda area on the tableland south of Oshkosh. The youngest of five children, of Cecil and Percy (Peterson) Beam, LaVere was delivered by Mrs. Beam herself, a noted mid-wife in that community. LaVere graduated with honors from the country school of District 6 in 1932. He rode horseback seven and one-half miles to Oshkosh until his high school graduation in 1936. After farming briefly before World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was accepted into officers training school. There he studied Arctic Warfare under Sir Hubert Wilkens. His assignments, however, were to a B-24 ground crew of the 460th Bomb Group, based in Bari, Italy. While there, his unit was awarded seven battle stars and two presidential citations. After Italy, he was assigned to Belim, Brazil for the duration of his enlistment. On May 21, 1946, LaVere married high school classmate Mary Elizabeth Clark in Lewellen and started a custom wheat harvesting crew. After brief sojourns in Denver and Caldwell, Idaho, they moved back to Mary's birthplace on Clear Creek near Lewellen in 1950. Here he farmed and engaged in construction until his death. Always active in the community, LaVere had chaired many committees In both the Kowanda and Lewellen United Methodist Churches. He'd been board president for School District 27 for 16 of the 29 years he was on that board, until the school was closed for consolidation in 1991. He and Mary were accomplished waltz and square dancers. LaVere had been instrumental in many charitable harvesting of crops or shingling of houses for ill or deceased neighbors. L. A., (as many knew him), was especially proud of "Beam's island" a park near his 110-year old rock house, open to the public and dedicated to his wife, who preceded him in death on April 10, 1987. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister in infancy, sister, Lillian Knerr in 1968 and brother George Beam in April of this year. He is survived by sons, Lanny (and Sheryl) of Savage, Minnesota; Mark (and Nita) of North Platte; and Rex, who resided at home with him, four grandsons. Lane of Savage, Dan (and Jadie) of Gering, Wes and Gabe of North Platte; and a great-granddaughter, Jasie of Gering, who arrived the day before L.A.'s stroke. Services for L. A. Beam were held Monday, July 7 in the Lewellen United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Ash Hollow Cemetery with Holechek Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Honorary Pallbearers were Ron McConkey, Louis Campbell, Ray Brooks, Albert Brown, Howard Newkirk, Everett McCormick and Orville Fairchild. Active Pallbearers were Lane Beam, Daniel Beam, Wesley Beam, Brandon Beam, Marty Beam and Edgar Bairn. Military Rites were conducted by the Garden County V.F.W. Post #5379.
