Description	:	MARY ELIZABETH BEAM Mary Elizabeth Beam was born February 17, 1918, the daughter of Wesley J. and Mary E. (Fairchild) Clark in her parent's home in Keith County, Nebraska. She grew up at Lewellen and graduated from Garden County High School in 1936. After attending school at Chadron and Kearney State Teachers Colleges, she began teaching in the surrounding area in 1939. She married LaVere Beam in Lewellen on May 21, 1946, when he returned from the service. They lived briefly in Denver, Colorado and Caldwell, Idaho, but returned to her childhood... Read More	MARY ELIZABETH BEAM Mary Elizabeth Beam was born February 17, 1918, the daughter of Wesley J. and Mary E. (Fairchild) Clark in her parent's home in Keith County, Nebraska. She grew up at Lewellen and graduated from Garden County High School in 1936. After attending school at Chadron and Kearney State Teachers Colleges, she began teaching in the surrounding area in 1939. She married LaVere Beam in Lewellen on May 21, 1946, when he returned from the service. They lived briefly in Denver, Colorado and Caldwell, Idaho, but returned to her childhood home in 1950 where they have lived and farmed since. She resumed her teaching career in 1972 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Kearney State College in 1980. She taught 2 1/2 years at the Goose Lake School (Dist. #30) north of Oshkosh and had been at the Lewellen Grade School until her 24-year battle with cancer forced her retirement earlier this year. She was a life-long member of the Lewellen Methodist Church, was active in other local groups, both extension and civic, and was inducted into the Garden County Hall of Fame in 1985. At a joint celebration with their sons in 1986, Mary and LaVere celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and 100th birthday of the rock house in which they lived. She passed away Friday morning, April 10, 1987, in the same bedroom in which she was born, at the age of 69 years, one month and 23 days. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 13, 1987, at the Lewellen United Methodist Church with Rev. Glen Emert officiating. Pallbearers were Kevin Richter, Dale Clark, Marty Beam, Keith Greenlee, Jim Douglas and Marion Richards. Burial was in Ash Hollow Cemetery under the direction of Holechok Funeral Home. A Memorial Fund has been established to be shared with local organizations. She is survived by her husband, LaVere; sons, Lanny and wife Sheryl of Savage, Minnesota, Mark and wife Nita of North Platte, Nebraska, and Rex of Lewellen, Nebraska; sisters: Mable (Dr. Warren) Messman, and Neva (Mrs. Bob) Richter, both of Kearney, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Evelyn Clark of Doniphan, Nebraska; a foster brother and sister: Jack (Bud) Knoell of Saratoga, Wyoming, and Majel (Mrs. Harry) Palmer of Sparks, Nevada; four grandsons: Lane and Dan of Savage, Minnesota, and Wes and Brandon of North Platte; many, many other relatives, friends and appreciative students. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Herman, of Doniphan, Nebraska.
