Mrs. Reuben Sell of Sutton. The single ring ceremony was performed at 12:00 noon on Sunday, November 11 at the Navy Chapel in San Diego, Calif., with Chaplain W. Lee Jones officiating. The bride wore a street length dress of white wool, accented with accessories of neutral brown. She carried a bridal bouquet of pink carnations with a detachable corsage. The couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Volk, friends of the bride and groom. Mrs. Sell is a graduate of the Alma high school with the Class of 1961 and of the Bonnel Beauty Academy of Hastings. Mr. Sell is a graduate of the Sutton high school with the Class of 1959, and previous to entering the Navy was engaged in farming with his father. The young couple are presently residing at 3137 National Ave., San Diego, Calif. ================================================ The Harvard Courier (Harvard, NE), Thursday, October 4, 1973; pg. 1 Sutton Co-Op Elevator is Scene of Tragedy Saturday; LaVern Sell Fatally Injured, Manager Recovered Chemical Fumigant ls Blamed for Mishap; Gangwish Back Home Tragedy truck suddenly Saturday morning at the Sutton Co-Op Grain Co. elevator, resulting in death to one worker and a near fatal experience for Co-Op Manager Jerry Gangwish. Dead on arrival at Mary Lanning hospital at Hastings was 32 year old LaVern Sell, an employe (sic) of less than 30 days at the elevator. Gangwish was taken to the hospital where he was in critical condition. However, he improved and was released from the hospital Wednesday, and will recuperate at home. According to reports, Sell and co-worker Jack Lohmeier were working together near the dump pit of the old elevator building. Lohmeier went to another location about 9 a.m. and was gone for a few minutes. When he returned he discovered that Sell had gone down into the boot pit, a service auger tunnel nearby. Lohmeier called to sell and when he received no answer, started down into the pit. However, he smell chemical fumes and climbed back out. Lohmeier then ran to the office nearby, reporting to Manager Jerry Gangwish and Asst. Manager Jerry Burklund, that Sell was apparently in trouble. Gangwish and Burkland went to the pit opening but returned to the office to don cannister gas masks. Gangwish put on a mask and returned to the pit while Burklund remained to turn in the alarm. Gangwish found Sell unconscious at the first landing about 12 feet down and tried to put the mask on him. Mr. Gangwish then tried to climb out of the pit but was overcome just as he reached the top of the ladder and fell back down. Volunteer firemen arrived with masks and oxygen equipment and the ambulance was called. Mr. Sell was brought up and loaded into the ambulance but was pronounced dead on arrival at Mary Lanning hospital at Hastings. Next, Mr. Gangwish was brought out and oxygen was administered before he was loaded into a vehicle to be taken to the hospital. Meanwhile the Clay Center ambulance was called and met the Sutton vehicle at the Clay Center junction. Gangwish was transferred to that ambulance and taken to the hospital. On arrival he was described as in critical condition. However, he improved and he was released Wednesday afternoon. Chemical fumes were described as carbon tetrachloride mixed in other chemicals used to fumigate the west storage bins on Friday by Harmack, Inc. of Minden. It was believed the poisonous fumes seeped into the boot pit through a connecting auger tunnel. The old elevator and bins have since been sealed off. All grain being stored for any length of time is periodically fumigated to kill weevil and other vermin.
