Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, Iowa, where there will be a wake service at 6 p.m. On July 30, 1916, on the family farm located east of the town of Bernard, a baby girl was born to Nick and Mary (Takes) Kurt. The baby girl was named LaVerne Caroline Kurt. She was the third oldest of five girls that Nick and Mary would have. She received her education at Bernard Elementary and attended High School at St. Patrick's Garryowen, until it burned down. She graduated from high school at East Side High School in Cascade in 1933. She married Lester Hentges on Nov. 26, 1935, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen; he preceded her in death on June 14, 1972. LaVerne worked for 15 years at Bunny's Tavern in Bernard, until Lester passed away. LaVerne and her son Jerry moved to Belvidere, Ill., where her daughter's family lived (Glen and Lois Walling) for 2 1/2 years. She then returned to Dubuque and worked at Sweetheart Bakery and the Dubuque YMCA, until her retirement in 2000. Wherever LaVerne lived or worked, she enjoyed the many people she met. Surviving are four children, Carl (Sally) Hentges, of Asbury, Iowa, Jerry Hentges, of Dubuque, Fred (Marion) Hentges, of Centralia, Iowa, and Pat (Mary Beth) Hentges, of Bernard; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Williams, of Tucson, Ariz. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lois Walling; three sisters, Rita Connolly, Irene Wolfe and Loretta Kurt; three brothers-in-law, Randal Williams, Walter Connolly and Ted Wolfe; a son-in-law, Glen Walling; and a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Brooke Henneberry.
