Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m., and a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 5 p.m. She was born on July 10, 1918, in Bernard, daughter of Nicholas and Mary Ann (Takes) Kurt. Loretta attended the Bernard Public School through eighth grade. She enjoyed spelling and drawing. Her high school years were spent at St. Patrick's, Garryowen, rural Bernard. She was a busy girl after high school, working various jobs and traveling. In 1953, she worked as a nurse's aide at St. Francis Hospital in Freeport, Ill. It was then 18 years out of high school that she decided to attend St. Anthony's School of Nursing in Rockford, Ill., to become a nurse. She received her diploma three years later, and continued to work there for two years. She then accepted a job at the John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, where she worked for 20 years, rotating shifts on the medical and surgical floors and in the emergency room at times. Loretta enjoyed going to dances and playing the piano. She also took frequent bus trips to Chicago's Wrigley Field and to St. Louis to watch the Cubs and Cardinals play baseball. She also enjoyed bus trips to Washington, D.C., and Quebec, Canada. She attended two World Fairs, one in New York, and the other in Montreal, Canada. In 1969, she took a trip to Chile, South America, where she visited her sister, Dorothy, and her husband. They would go to Santiago, Chile, often to go shopping. She was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Our Blessed Mother Court 1926. On May 6, 1999, Loretta went to live at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade. Surviving are two sisters, LaVerne Hentges, of Dubuque, and Dorothy Williams, of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Gladys Merfeld, of Dubuque. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Rita Connolly and Irene Wolfe; and three brothers-in-law, Walter Connolly, Les Hentges and Roy Williams. A Loretta A.
