Description	:	LaVerne John Brucklacher was born on April 3, 1928 to John F. and Edna E. (Downer) Brucklacher of rural Freeman, SD. LaVerne grew up in Turner County eleven miles southeast of Freeman, SD. He went to school at Salem Township District #47, then to Freeman Public high School from where he graduated in 1947. (Downer) Brucklacher of rural Freeman, SD. LaVerne grew up in Turner County eleven miles southeast of Freeman, SD. He went to school at Salem Township District #47, then to Freeman Public high School from where he graduated in 1947. After graduation, he worked at John Morrell & company in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1950, LaVerne married Bernice Odelia Delzer, and soon thereafter, he was called to serve in the united States army. He was stationed at Fort Eustis near Newport News, Virginia, and served in the Transportation company. LaVerne obtained the rank of corporal, and was honorably discharged in 1953. During the time that LaVerne was in the service, he and Bernice resided in Williamsburg, Virginia where their son, Douglas, was born. With a toddler in their car and a trailer in tow, they made the long trip back to SD and settled into their farm home one mile south of Meridian corner along Highway 81. LaVerne farmed for 46 years, and also worked at Freeman Elementary School, Freeman Community Recycling Center, and Huber Motor Company, Inc., Freeman, SD. LaVerne spent many days fencing miles of farmland, milking cows by hand, and fixing equipment around the farm. He was hired by many to paint barns and out-buildings, and for those that were beyond repair he tore down. LaVerne was creative and witty. He was always inventing things to make life tasks better. LaVerne and Bernice retired from farming in 1999 and moved to Freeman, SD. LaVerne was a faithful caretaker for Bernice during her health trials and provided her comfort during her stay at Oakview Terrace. Due to his own health issues, in 2013, LaVerne moved from his home to the Salem Mennonite home, and then spent the rest of his earthly life at the Sioux Falls Veteran's Administration Medical center. LaVerne and Bernice were blessed with five children: Douglas, Teresa, David, Luann, and Sandra. Faith in God was very important to LaVerne. He was a member of the Salem Free Lutheran Church for 86 years where he served as deacon, trustee, and teacher of God's word. He also served as the Salem Community Cemetery President, and a clerk for Molan District #60. LaVerne is survived by his children Douglas (Karen) Brucklacher of Watertown, SD, Teresa (Lon) Goertz-Reidburn of Clark, SD, David (Lori) Brucklacher of Longmont, CO, Luann (Jon) Kayl of Renner, SD, and Sandra (Dave) Poppenga of Renner, SD. He will also be missed by his sister Alice (Malcom) Melin of Hartford, SD, and his brothers Alvin (Lenore) Brucklacher of Philip, SD, Harold (June) Brucklacher of Sioux Falls, SD, and Ervin (Marlene) Brucklacher of Freeman, SD; grandchildren Amy Dougherty, Amber (Steve) Stanton, Sara (Dan) Poppen, and Brian (Roshelle) Goertz; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and brothers- and sisters-in-law Maxine Delzer, Helene Delzer, Bonny and Larry Bingen, Sid and Betty Barnes; and a host of nieces and nephews. LaVerne was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, his parents John and Edna Brucklacher, son-in-law Dale Goertz, mother and father-in-law Theodore (Ted) and Augusta Delzer, and brothers-in-law Lavern Delzer and Dale Delzer.
