JUNE STEFFEN June Steffen, 72 of Gordon died March 18, 2005 at Gordon Memorial Hospital. She was born June 1,1932 at the Gregory Community Hospital in Gregory, S.D. to Herman and Helen Lubbers. As a young girl, she and her family lived on a farm by Gregory. On May 26,1952 she married her soul mate, Robert Steffen. To this union six girls were born. In their early years, they lived in South Dakota. In 1964 they moved their family, a milk cow and the kids' cats in the back of a truck and an overflowing station wagon to Gordon, NE where they currently reside. June worked as an aide at Gordon Memorial Hospital and as bookkeeper at the Gordon Livestock Auction. Later she worked twenty-seven years at the Gordon Clinic and Sandhills Surgical Center as bookkeeper, office manager, and various other capacities. She had a great compassion for people, always sharing her special "gifts". She retired in 1996. Children were first and foremost in her life. Her greatest joy was caring for and watching her children and grandchildren. She made many personal sacrifices for her family. She loved to garden. The harvest of her large gardens and diligent laborers were enjoyed by many. From this garden, she enjoyed canning and preserving produce for her family. Flowers were also part of her green thumb. Her life "blossomed" through her flowers. Cooking was her passion; and she was a wonderful cook. Fresh breads, rolls, pies, and many new recipes were enjoyed by all that knew her. She never knew a stranger. Within minutes of their arrival, she was cooking and sharing a dessert or a meal. She enjoyed collecting and reading in excess of 1000 cookbooks. She spent many a sleepless night reading them. Survivors include her husband Robert of 53 years, daughters and spouses: Kathy and Robert Russell, Barbara and Weldon Calkins, Julie and Warren Madison, Sharon and Bill Gates, Anita and Denny Janssen, and Janet and Chuck Hinn; 15 grandchildren and 1 ½ great grandchildren. Survivors also include siblings Mary Jean (Martin) Liegl, Marge Minkel, Jim (Linda) Lubbers, and Arlene (Butch) Heine. Preceding her in death were her parents and her sister, Alice. Services were held on Monday, March 21, 2005 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Rushville, NE. .June's grandsons serving as pallbearers were Michael Russell, Brian and Eric Calkins, Derek Janssen, and Brad, Steve and Matt Gates. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Bobbi Jo Archibald, Alicia and Cheryl Madison, Sharla Janssen, Celsey, Cirsten Carlee and Carson Hinn and Great grandson Darin Archibald.
