LaVetta Mary Gerling, daughter of Otto and Ruby Alice (Peek) Gerling was born June 22, 1936, at Ellendale. This is where she grew up, graduating with the Class of 1954 from Ellendale High School. She went on to attend Ellendale Normal and Industrial College for two years, receiving her teaching certificate. She worked as a teller at First National Bank in Ellendale. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Sand on March 1, 1960, in First Baptist Church in Ellendale. They made their home on a Sand family farm three miles east of Ellendale. They farmed there raising small grains and livestock. They semi-retired in 1998 and moved 1 miles north of Ellendale. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a board member of Whitestone Battlefield, Secretary of Dickey County Farmers Union, caretaker of Norway Pioneer Cemetery and a member of the Golden Swingers Senior Group. She was also active with delivery of Meals on Wheels. She was a Master Gardener of a large garden also raising flower seeds and distributing them to family and friends throughout the United States. She enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center and quilt making for Lutheran World Relief. She will always be remembered for being a help to others in any way she could. Survivors include her husband of Ellendale; her mother of Ellendale; three sons, Dean (Christine) Sand of Bethel, Minn., Erik Sand of Jamestown and Paul (Sandra) Sand of Woodridge, Ill.; one sister, LaVanna (James “Bud”) Krovoza of Aberdeen; one brother, Dr. Max (Petra) Gerling of Alachua, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Jeanne Gerling of Ellendale; six grandchildren; and her sister in spirit, Barbara Young of Ellendale. Her father, one son, LaVerne Gerling and one daughter-in-law, Victoria preceded her in death. The organist will be Lois Mueller and the soloist will be Marin Sand. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale have been entrusted with arrangements.
