Ruby Alice Peek, daughter of John Oliver and Mary Alice (Thompson) Peek, was born July 25, 1912, in Tecumseh, Neb. She was the youngest of five children. Ruby Alice Peek, daughter of John Oliver and Mary Alice (Thompson) Peek, was born July 25, 1912, in Tecumseh, Neb. She was the youngest of five children. She moved to Ellendale with her family in 1927. She lived through difficult times in the Great Depression and the Dirty Thirties. She was united in marriage to Otto Gerling, who was the blacksmith in Ellendale, on Jan. 24, 1941, in Ellendale. After all their children had gone to college, Ruby worked as a cook at UND-EB, and later at Ellendale Public Schools on the janitorial staff and then as a cook at the Senior Center until she was 88. Most people in and around Ellendale knew her as the popcorn lady, operating her popcorn and sno-cone stand on the corner of the blacksmith shop property. Her husband died Dec. 7, 1980. She was the granddaughter of a prominent Baptist minister in Nebraska; she also touched many lives as a Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church of Ellendale, of which she was a lifelong member. Survivors include one daughter, LaVanna (Bud) Krovoza of Aberdeen; one son, Dr. Max (Petra) Gerling of Alachua, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren. Her parents; husband; one son, LaVerne; one daughter, LaVetta Sand; one daughter-in-law, Jeanne Gerling; one son-in-law, Lawrence Sand; one grandson, David Gerling; and two great-grandchildren: Mariah and Jeremiah Stave, preceded her in death. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale has been entrusted with arrangements. This obituary was originally published in the Aberdeen American News.
