Description	:	OAKLAND -- Lavina Etta Thomas, 96, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at the Oak Grove Living Center in Waterville, with her family by her side. She was born in Eastport on Aug. 11, 1912, the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Robinson) Hanson. Lavina was a straight-A student and graduated from Woodland High School in 1930. While there she excelled in basketball and tutored many students that otherwise might not have graduated. Read More	OAKLAND -- Lavina Etta Thomas, 96, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at the Oak Grove Living Center in Waterville, with her family by her side. She was born in Eastport on Aug. 11, 1912, the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Robinson) Hanson. Lavina was a straight-A student and graduated from Woodland High School in 1930. While there she excelled in basketball and tutored many students that otherwise might not have graduated. Her favorite job was being a wife and homemaker but she also worked at Skowhegan Spinning Mill, Diamond International and at Camp Manitou from 1953 until 1987. She excelled at being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Every Sunday she had family at her home for meals. Lavina enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, and baking. She was well known for her biscuits and made mittens, slippers, and hunting socks and gloves. She enjoyed hunting. After her retirement she traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, John Thomas, whom she married in 1936; three daughters, Betty Baily, Gloria Thomas and Carolyn Theriault; a son, Darrell Thomas; two grandsons, Daniel Theriault and William Willette; and a granddaughter, Jessica Dickerson. Surviving are two sons, Paul Thomas of Smithfield and Johnny Thomas of Oakland; five daughters, Dolores Dorr of Blacksberg, S.C., Norma Bulmer of Smithfield, Judith Evans of Avon, Conn., Lynda Dunaway of Oakland, and Patricia Dickerson of Winter Haven, Fla.; two brothers, Daniel Hanson of Presque Isle and Edward Hanson of Eastport; two sisters, Marguerite Howe of Baileyville and Joyce Willette of Presque Isle; 33 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to visit 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland, where a funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 14. Burial will follow at the Lewis Cemetery in Oakland.
