(Olesen) Brobst, the daughter of "Ole" Christian Olesen and Christina (Hendrickson) Olesen was born on December 19,1916 on a farm just a few miles south and west of Graettinger, Iowa. (Olesen) Brobst, the daughter of "Ole" Christian Olesen and Christina (Hendrickson) Olesen was born on December 19,1916 on a farm just a few miles south and west of Graettinger, Iowa. Lavinia died on Monday, January 26, 2009 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of ninety-two years and one month. On March 12, 1936 she was united in marriage to George A. Brobst in Graettinger. She worked alongside George for the first six years of their marriage as a hired hand on farms in northwest Iowa, using the skills and work ethic she learned while growing up on the farm and working in the "Cafe" in downtown Graettinger. For extra income she also worked cleaning homes, washing and ironing clothes, and working in the dry cleaners in Spencer, Iowa. Lavinia was a faithful wife and a loving mother who enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers and times when family could get together, particularly when the Olesen family met at the home of Grandpa, "Pa', in Graettinger. It was here that her prized fried chicken and banana cream pies were quickly devoured with no chance for seconds. As can be attested by her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren she was famous for her chocolate chip cookies. Some, however, would argue that her date filled pinwheel cookies were the best. Lavinia loved her "Pa", Ole, and was amazed that he was able to raise ten energetic kids all by himself on the farm after his wife died. She was proud of her heritage and was quick to remind people that any character flaws she might have was because of her being a "stubborn Dane". Lavinia was a long time member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger and enjoyed spending time with the quilting ladies and the Eve circle/study group. Lavinia Brobst is survived by two sons, Dan and Carol Brobst of Hudson, Iowa and Gail and Julie Brobst of Holton, Kansas; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren; three sisters. Viola Enger of Ruthven, Vivian Larson of California, and Lillian Lammers of Graettinger; one brother Orville of California and many special in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Lawrence, one daughter, Janice, one granddaughter, Dee Anne (Helmich) Rezac, one great granddaughter, Amber (Neppl) Carter, her parents, two sisters, and four brothers.
