Description	:	A traffic accident early Sunday morning claimed the life of an 18-year-old Mt. Airy youth, the State police have reported. Lawrence Albert Grimes, Box 7, Mt. Airy, was dead on arrival at Carroll County General Hospital following a crash on State Route 27, approximately 3/10 of a mile north of Brodbeck road, near Taylorsville. Read More	A traffic accident early Sunday morning claimed the life of an 18-year-old Mt. Airy youth, the State police have reported. Lawrence Albert Grimes, Box 7, Mt. Airy, was dead on arrival at Carroll County General Hospital following a crash on State Route 27, approximately 3/10 of a mile north of Brodbeck road, near Taylorsville. According to the police, Grimes was a passenger in a car which ran off the roadway, travelling 410 feet before striking a speed limit sign broadside. The car then crossed the highway and slammed into a utility pole, snapping it in half. The auto continued on an additional 91 feet before bursting into flames, the police said. The driver, Dwight Leonard Mulllnix, 22, 5 Warfield drive, Mt. Airy, and Grimes were pulled away from the car by nearby residents, the police reported. The accident happened at approximately 1:30 a.m., December 21, according to the police. At the time, the road was dry and visibility was good, the police added. Mulllnix was admitted to the county hospital, where he Is listed in satisfactory condition with multiple lacerations to his face. Police investigators listed speed and driver error as contributing factors In the accident, with excessive speed being the probably cause. The police report said charges will be preferred against Mulllnix. However, they are pending for consultation with T. Bryan Mclntire, county State's Attorney. Grimes was born in Frederick, the son of Ray A. and the late Martha Hood Grimes. He graduated from South Carroll High School last year and had been working In Virginia as a carpenter. Besides his father, he Is survived by three sisters, Linda, Jean, Judith and Joanne. Services were to be held for Grimes on Tuesday at the Calvary Methodist Church in Mt. Airy.
