Don Zahm, 68, of Greeley died when his 1993 Chevy S-10 Blazer collided with an International semi-wrecker driven by Robert Stevenson, 24, of Grand Island, Greeley County sheriff's deputy David Clarke said. Stevenson had minor injuries and refused medical treatment. According to the sheriff's report, Zahm was driving the wrong way on the northbound shoulder slightly before 1:30 p.m. when his vehicle collided with Stevenson's. "The Blazer was southbound on the northbound shoulder, and the semi was northbound," Clarke said. "It's probably as close to head on as you can get." The reason Zahm was driving the wrong way on the shoulder remained under investigation, Clarke said. Zahm was declared dead at the scene. He was not wearing his seat belt, Clarke said. Stevenson had his seat belt on at the time of the accident. The Greeley County Sheriff's Department, Nebraska State Patrol and the State Patrol's Carrier Enforcement Division closed both lanes of Highway 281 from approximately 1:40 to 4 p.m., Clarke said. Both lanes were reopened by 6 p.m. There were eight officers on the scene through most of the cleanup. "It was one of those situations where you realize there was no point in hurrying," he said. "It was a bad accident."
