Description	:	Laurence E. Berry of Ashland, New Hampshire, passed on July 7th at 91 years of age. He was born on November 16th, 1922, the oldest child of Purvis S. Berry and Irene M. Lafoe. He entered the Army Air Corps on November 2, 1943, serving in the 447th Bomb Group, 708th Squadron in Rattlesdon, England. Berry of Ashland, New Hampshire, passed on July 7th at 91 years of age. He was born on November 16th, 1922, the oldest child of Purvis S. Berry and Irene M. Lafoe. He entered the Army Air Corps on November 2, 1943, serving in the 447th Bomb Group, 708th Squadron in Rattlesdon, England. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. Lawrence went to work for the L.W. Packard Woolen Mill after returning home and retired after working there for 55 years. An active member in the town of Ashland, he regularly attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was a life member of the Dupuis Cross Post 15 American Legion, as well as former Post Commander. Laurence was also the Chef Degare of the Forty and Eight in Laconia in 1960, later becoming a life member. Laurence married his wife of 67 years, Aura Berry, in April of 1947. Lawrence is survived by their 5 children: Robert, Laurence, Richard, Jill and Janet. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. (full names deleted for privacy) He joins his parents who predeceased him and his brother Donald Berry who was killed during World War II. Calling hours will be from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on. Thursday, July 10th at the Dupuis Funeral Home, 11 Hill Avenue in Ashland. Services will be Friday, July 11th at 11 a.m. at the St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Ashland. - - - - Added by BL Hughes: England, January 13, 1944 Dear Mom: As usual I received a nice letter from you today and also the Plymouth Record. I was sure glad to get it as I do like the read the home town news. I saw in the paper that Bernard Hinds was in Scotland. Well, I've been there too. It's very pretty there and much like our good old New Hampshire. The people are very pleasant and try to help you to get better acquainted with their country. The bigger part of this country over there is made up of farms. Well, I have been here two months now. The time goes fast as we do keep so busy most of the day. I am getting used to the blackouts now — you know after dark everything is black. It sure is funny to hear people walking on all sides of you and not be able to see them. We all have flashlights that we use off and on. The English call them torches. I am feeling swell as usual and everything is just fine. You wanted to know if there was anything I would like. Well. Now I think of it, I would like a box of chocolates if you happen to see some. You see we all have ration cards which allows us to have two bars of candy, soap, razorblades, gum, cookies and seven packages of cigarettes a week. There are a few extra things we can get so you see it isn't too bad. Well, the New Year is well underway and let's hope this mess ends soon. Boy! I sure will be glad to get back to the home town and get to work once more. It sure will be grand to go hunting and fishing again with Don, especially at Millsfield. Laurence Berry, son of Mrs. Irene Berry of Ashland, arrived at his home Tuesday night on a 30 days' furlough after several months overseas with the 8th Air Force, where he served as an aircraft armorer. Cpl. Berry was responsible that all aerial guns used by Fortress gunners at his base were kept in perfect condition at all times. His job of cleaning, storing and checking weapons, often took him into the late hours of the night, so that the planes would be ready for an early morning takeoff to bomb vital sites in Germany. Cpl. Berry was a member of the 447th Bomb Group and a unit of the 3rd Air Division, the division which was cited by the President for the now historic England-Africa shuttle bombing attack on the Messerschmidt factories at Regensberg, Germany. Cpl. Berry, a graduate of Ashland High School, entered the Army Air Forces in February 1943. He was employed in the Packard Woolen Mills before entering the service. He wears the ETO Ribbon, 6 Battle Stars and the Presidential Citation. - - - England, August 18, 1944. Dear Sandra: Just a few lines to let you know that I received your swell card and was happy to get it. Thanks awfully. It sure is nice to know that my little neighbor has not forgotten me. Perhaps you don't remember me very well, but you can be sure I have thought of you and everything connected with home very often. How lucky you are to have such a wonderful home and also to be living in such a grand state. Of all the places I have been there is no one evens come close to it. Boy, that's where I am going to live, always. How true that old saying "there is no place like home." Come to think of it I'll bet this is your very first letter. If not, I'll bet it's the first one from England. It is very pretty here. You should see the pretty flowers and lovely gardens. It has also been very warm for the past week or two which is something unusual for England. It sure makes me want to go fishing or just lie out on the lawn under the shade of a tree and take life easy. I am sure that before long everyone will be happy again. What a wonderful day that will be! Well, Sandra, it is getting time for me to go to bed, so I must close. I do hope you receive this letter O. K. I am sorry it isn't very interesting, but at least you'll know I have remembered you also. Give my very best wished to your Mom and Dad. I hope we can also be together someday soon then will be the happy days. I hope they are not too far off. This is Saturday night as I write you these few lines. I am at the Red Cross Club, having just come from the "Y" where I filled up on tea and cake, so as you may well guess I have my stomach full most of the time. It is raining a little outside now, not very hard but enough to get one wet. It's the first rain we have had in a couple of weeks. It has been very nice flying weather and by the looks of the planes up there, they are surely making the most of the good clear days. Last night around 11:45 I saw one of the most beautiful sights in my life. One really had to see it to really realize just how it was. It was a very clear night with the sky full of stars and the RAF was going out in force. They all had the lights of their wing tips in different colored one red, and green and there were so many of them, at least a thousand if not more. For thirty minutes I just stood and watched them go over. All I can say it was truly beautiful, and beyond words to explain. There must be a lot of lumber where Dad is cutting, as they have been there a long time. Just wait until we all get home and we will go and see a lot of shows. I miss them all very much. I used to like the Sunday afternoon rides and know my grandmother loved them too. I suppose by now my house must be a lot of bushes.
