Olson of Humboldt, whose death on Friday was reported in Saturday's Register, was born July 19, 1924, at Elsmore at the family home to Carl A. and Mary Cecilia Byrum Olson. He enlisted in the U.S. Army May 21, 1940, serving with the 209th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. He drove supplies, rations, gasoline, oil and personnel in the Aleutians, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium. He also drove nitroglycerin and dynamite in the Aleutians. He was separated from the service on August 25, 1945. He was married to Alice Elnora Mintz on February 25, 1946 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Humboldt. She died in 1997. He was employed at Stanolind/Service Pipeline for 19 years, then was owner and operator of Olson Brothers Contractors for 23 years and the owner of King Burger in Humboldt for 14 years. He was a member of the Saint Joseph's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Humboldt, and a lifetime member of Cecil J. Meeker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1654 of Chanute. He is survived by three sons, John and Michael of Humboldt, and Joseph of Elsmore, three daughters, Rita Baker and Anna Cole, Humboldt, and Jane Ehits of Donnellson, Iowa; two brothers, John David of Los Angeles, California, and Paul of Humboldt; a sister, Hazel Corinne Wesenick of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 12 grandchildren, 17 stepgrandchildren, 17 step great-grandchildren, and one stepgreat-great grandson. A brother, Harold T. Olson died earlier. Funeral services were today. Military honors were conducted by Cecil J. Meeker Post 1654 VFW of Chanute. Memorial contributions to the Humboldt Recreation Commission may be left at Johnson Kunkel Mortuary in Humboldt.
