Read More	Elmer Lawrence Maxvold was born October 2, 1917, at DeSmet, South Dakota, son of Lawrence and Bertha Maxvold. He was baptized December 22, l917. He lived there until he was seven. Then the family moved first to Mitchell and then in the fall of l924, they moved to Huron, South Dakota. He attended the American Lutheran Sunday School and received his confirmation on May 7, l933. He graduated from Huron High School in l938. Elmer was a Boy Scouts and worked at Swander's Baking Company. Like many of the local Huron young men then, he enlisted in the National Guard in February 1941 as Company C of the Army's 109th Engineers. In February l941, that unit reported to Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. He was sent overseas in January 1942 landing first in north Ireland and then in England. He was active in the African, Sicilian, and Italian campaigns. While he was in Italy, he wrote his parents in a letter dated March 27, 1944 parents and describing the country: Here in Italy the country is mountainous. The country is pretty, but in a bad way from the war. Most of all of the olive trees are ruined and so are the towns in the war zone.... Everywhere you look you see a large castle built upon mountains, used as protection in the olden days but not much good during this age. The sad part of this country at present are the woman and children. They hardly have a thing to their name. There I stand in chow line darn near frozen and then up walks a woman with a child in her arms that has next to nothing on. Its legs are blue from the cold and perhaps behind her are a couple of other small children with no shoes on at all. They wait around until we are through eating and then take what we may throw away. I know people at home have no idea as to what it is like. It's going to take the small people a long time to get back what little they had before war. Everything the farmers do is crude. They use only oxen for a beast of burden. Many of the plows are homemade, mainly from wood. They thresh out a lot of things by beating in and walking some animals over it. There are just a few acres to a field, which by they way looks nice, looking down from the mountain road. Maxvold also told how they were much closer to the enemy in this Italian campaign and involved with several artillery barrages. Private First Class Elmer Lawrence Maxvolf perished on August 8, 1944 in Italy while he was driving a truckload of ammunition's to the front lines. His truck had hit a land mine and exploded. Captain James Stevenson wrote the following to Maxvold's parents: Elmer was sitting in the cab of his truck, which was being loaded with explosives that had been used in a mine warfare and demolitions school, when somehow the explosives that had been used in a mine warfare and demolitions school, were set off, causing the death of nine men and seriously injuring two others. Death was instantaneous. Private Maxvold was buried in the American Cemetery in Italy. Beadle County has remembered him with an inscription on a granite obelisk in front of the Huron Public Library. His survivors at the time of his death were his parents Lawrence and Bertha, two sisters, Norma and Iona Moe, and two brothers, Donald, who was in the Marines, and Marvin.
