Read More	Well-known Sterling resident Lawrence G. Giacomini, who would have celebrated his 98th birthday March 24, died this morning at Rose Arbor Nursing Home. Mr. Giacomini was active in a number of civic organizations most of his life, and was possibly best known for the many years he served as song leader for Sterling Rotary He opened a law practice in Sterling in 1914, and maintained an active interest in the firm until his retirement in 1978. It was only about three years ago that he retired from managing the family farms. Mr. Giacomini was one of only two surviving charter members of Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336, for which he served as exalted ruler in 1933. He was also the sole surviving charter member of the Sterling Knights of Columbus. Mr. Giacomini was born March 24,1888, in Stanton County, Neb., at the family farm called "Haymow," to Anthony and Anna Tam Giacomini. He came to Sterling with his family in 1901 at the age of 13, and lived here the rest of his life. He graduated from Sterling High School, then known as Logan County High School, in 1906. Mr. Giacomini attended the University of Colorado (CU), where he received his A.B. degree in 1911 and his LLB degree in 1913. He was admitted to the Colorado Bar on March 4, 1914, and after serving a short apprenticeship in the office of Allen & Webster in Denver, he opened his own law office in Sterling. Upon his return to Sterling from college, he was elected the first president of the Sterling Lions Club. On June 29, 1925, he married Thelma Mentgen. The couple had been married for 61 years.Mr. Giacomini was a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, of which he was the choir director for many years. He also belonged to the Sterling Country Club, was a member of the 13th Judicial District Bar Association, and an honorary life member of the Colorado Bar Association and the University of Colorado Alumni Association. Mr. Giacomini was very active in local music and theater productions, and did many amateur performances at the old Rialto Theater. In 1945 he formed a law partner ship with his son, Robert Giacomini. On June 7, 1963, he was awarded Honorary Life Membership in the Associated Alumni of CU in recognition of 50 years of loyal and devoted interest in the university. In June of 1963 he presided as emcee at the 50th reunion of the 1913 graduating class of CU. Mr. Giacomini was awarded the Distinguished Service Award on Jan. 1, 1979, by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Giacomini is survived by his wife, Thelma Giacomini of Sterling; two sons, Donald L. Giacomini of Denver and Robert W. Giacomini of Sterling; two daughters, Helen M. McKenzie of Sterling and Jane E. Van Olinda of New York City, N.Y.; eight grand and two great- grandchildren.
