Larry was born March 18, 1930 on the family ranch in Sheridan County to George L. and Bernice (Heelan) Schmitt. He grew up and attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Gordon High School. He attended Creighton University in Omaha, NE before enlisting in the Navy during the Korean War. Larry served his country from 1951 until 1955 when he resumed his studies and graduated from Creighton University in 1958. He married Pat Gibson on April 2, 1956 at Chadron, NE. To this union four children were born: Lorraine, Stephen, Maureen, and Michael. Larry was active in family ranching before going to work as a sales representative in hardware distributing. He traveled Wyoming, Nebraska and the front range of Colorado. He was regarded for his impeccable customer service and attention to detail. Because of this, Larry made many friends of his customers. He loved calf roping and ranching in his younger years; his job, golf, and providing for his family in his middle years; and dogs, horses, his home, and neighbors in his later years, and always his family and friends. Larry was a member of the church, Knights of Columbus, and Michie McKeown American Legion Post #124. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Pat Schmitt of Mitchell, NE; children and grandchildren Lorraine (Bill) Hendrickson of Alliance, NE and children Cara, Caisha and Courtney, Stephen (Patty) Schmitt of Ogallala, NE and children Patrick and Sam, Maureen Merritt of Alliance, NE and children Morgan and Coltan and Michael (Glenda) Schmitt of Henry, NE and children Jacob, Ellie and Margie; three great grandchildren Ronin, Amaliya and Kelton; brother Louis Schmitt of Gordon, NE and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
