Lawrence James Condon was born July 5, 1910 in Canyon City, TX to Guernsey H. and Elizabeth (Schneider) Condon and died November 23, 1997 in Denver, CO. From Texas the family moved back to Aurora, where he spent his youth. After high school graduation, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska, where he paid for his tuition by working in the cattle barn, living in a dorm with other young men in the loft above the barn. He was a member of the National Collegiate Champion Livestock Judging Team and Farmhouse fraternity. He graduated from the university in 1936, after which he married Helen Hengstler. They moved to the family farm in Creighton, where he joined her father in farming the 160 acre family homestead. Two children were born to this union, John Lawrence and Helen Elizabeth. Condon was active in community service and state agricultural affairs. He taught agricultural classes in northeast Nebraska for veterans returning home from WWII. Many of his pupils remained in the community, achieving success in their own operations. He served as chairman of the church council at Zion Lutheran Church and was chairman of the building committee, when the present church was constructed. He was president of the school board of Creighton Community Schools for many years, during the time when the new high school was built. He was also active in the Creighton Chamber of Commerce. He served many years on the board of directors of the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association, including two terms as president and received the Nebraska Premiere Seed Grower in 1957. The Condons were named the Lincoln Journal-Star Nebraska Farm Family of the Year in 1956. He was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement and served for many years as ambassador to the Knights of AkSarBen. He was joined in the family farming operations by his son, John and later his grandsons, David and John Condon. His wife, Helen, died in 1983. He married Jean Buckingham in Exeter, CA and they divided their time between their home in California and the farm in Creighton. He maintained an active interest in Agriculture and was a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Lawrence died November 23, 1997 in Denver, CO at the home of his daughter, Betty Luce. Survivors include his wife, Jean; son and daughter-in-law, John and Nancy Condon of Creighton; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and George Luce of Denver, CO; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
