Carl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Carl, in a lake near Chicago, while enjoying a vacation outing, it is once more conclusively shown that a man's destiny is immutably fixed, for this World War II Veteran had fought on the Normandy Beaches at San Lo, was caught in the Belgian Bulge, was in the African Middle Eastern theater of war, was wounded but escaped the deadly dangers of combat to die a victim of an accident. Mr. Carl wore the Good Conduct Medal; a Distinguished Unit Badge, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal; he was a Thompson sub-machine gun expert, a member of a tank destroyer battalion that made history in the war. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Carl of near Sutton. Besides the parents, two brothers and three sisters mourn his death. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church Friday morning at 9:30 o'clock, Father Hennessey conducting the military requiem high mass. The American Legion post paid honoring tribute to their departed fellow member. The color bearers were Patrick Cronin and Roger Sheridan; the color guard, Joseph Finnigan and Edward Griess; bearers were Jerry Sharkey, Jerry and Wayne Lohmeier, Gene Leiniger, Harry Nolde and Robert Wachter. The firing squard members were Lorence Griess, Carl Kamler, Harry Nolde and Edgar Griess, with Walter Glantz in charge. The departed was a young man with the promise of a useful life. He was a valiant soldier, in peace he took up an honorable vocation and was headed for business success. His death saddens the home and was a shock to many friends. Contributor: M.
