"Swede" Wolter, 84, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, formerly of Denver, Iowa, Waverly, Iowa, and Largo, Florida, died Saturday, July 18, 2015, with his family by his side at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minnesota. Swede was born on February 16, 1931, in Denver, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Esther (Weltzin) Wolter. He graduated from Denver High School in 1949. He married Marilyn Mishler in 1951, and later divorced. On May 27, 1967, he was married to Lois (Meyer) Wolter, to whom he remained married for 48 years. The quintessential entrepreneur, Swede started a service station business in Denver, Iowa, in 1956. Working with his wife, Lois, and several of his children, he ultimately grew it into a pioneering convenience store chain, Wolter Mini Marts, which included its own wholesale business, petroleum distributor, and deli operation, before being sold to LaCrosse, Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip, Inc. in 1985. After retirement, Swede and Lois ultimately moved to Florida, where they were active in Christ the King Lutheran Church of Largo, Florida, and a range of other causes, including the Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska and Seward Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. A life-long baseball enthusiast, Swede started playing with the Denver Blue Sox in 1954. Known as "the holler guy," for getting the team fired up, he became team manager in 1955. One of his proudest moments was when the Blue Sox advanced to the U.S. Northwest Regional Tournament in Pierre, South Dakota, where they were one game away from beating a team from Seattle and winning the tournament. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan his entire life, passing down that passion to his children and grandchildren. (Have you seen the standings this year?) He is survived by his wife, Lois of Apple Valley, Minnesota; one brother, Gene (Valois) Wolter of Marion, Iowa; son Gregory (Bonnie) Wolter of Catoosa, Oklahoma; son David (Marva) Wolter of Denver, Iowa; son James (Amy) Wolter of Franklin, Tennessee; daughter Andrea (Juan) Parales of Taft, Texas; son Todd (Kristen) Wolter of Denver, Iowa; daughter Lisa (Mark) Saathoff of Burnsville, Minnesota; son Daniel Wolter of Burnsville, Minnesota; fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. His parents and his older brother, Robert, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church in Denver, Iowa, with Pastor Don Illian presiding. A lunch will be provided afterwards. A private burial with family will be held at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa, before the service. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kaiser Corson Funeral Home in Denver. Memorials may be directed to Christ the King Lutheran Ministries in Largo, Florida, and the L.K. Wolter Academia Cristiana, a Christian school in Trujillo, Peru, dedicated in Swede's honor by his son, Greg.
