Schommer's obituary; Lawrence Leroy "Shorty" Schommer, age 75, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2005 at his home. He was born March 14, 1930 at Chadron, Nebraska to William P. and Iva P. (Wagner) Schommer. His family moved to Alliance in 1942, and he graduated from Alliance High School in 1947. On October 29, 1948 he married LaVona "Butch" Butcher at Denver, Colorado. He was the owner and operator of a Texaco station in Alliance for a number of years, and in 1963 he changed careers and began working in Banking. He joined the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department in 1949, and served as Fire Chief from 1953 to 1962. In 1963 he served as Chairman for the Nebraska State Volunteer Firemen's Association Convention held in Alliance. He helped start the Junior Fire Patrol program while serving as Fire Chief, and continued to serve as a Fire Captain until 1980. He spent a number of years working as an instructor for fire and rescue training for the State of Nebraska for the western part of the state, and at the annual state fire school held in Grand Island. In 1968 he received the Aksarben Award of Merit for his service as a fireman. In 1981 he worked on the committee that designed the present Fire Station, and in 1983 he completed 34 years of service on the Fire Department. He continued to assist with the Fire Department's annual Bosses Night until 2003. He was a member of the Men's Golf Association, the Elks, Eagles, and an associate member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife LaVona of Alliance; daughters, Barbara Mart of Lincoln and Sandra Snow and Janet (Tom) Requejo all of Alliance; sons, Jon (Kathy) Schommer of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and Richard Schommer and David Schommer both of Alliance; sister, Gwen (Leonard) Peltz of Rimrock, Arizona; sister-in-law, Teresa Butcher of Sterling, Colorado; numerous nieces and nephews; seventeen grand children and eleven great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Bill and Paul. Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. Father Mike McDonald will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
