Schjodt, son of Peter and Emily Schjodt, was born July 24, 1911 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up on a farm near Renner, SD. Lawrence graduated from Washington High School. He continued to farm near Renner before moving to Harding County to work as a ranch hand in 1938. In 1941, he returned to Renner, where he owned and operated Renner Garage with his brother, Ed. Lawrence entered the U.S. Army on October 31, 1942 at Fort Crook, NE. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 10th Armored Division in Europe during World War II. Lawrence was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on January 15, 1946 at Camp McCoy, WI. He then returned to Renner. Lawrence was united in marriage with Fern Medema on April 16, 1947 in Sioux Falls. The couple moved into a house on S. Lowell Avenue in Sioux Falls, SD where they would live for the next 50+ years. Lawrence worked in the Sunshine Food Markets warehouse for 33 years before retiring in 1983. Lawrence was a member of Renner Lutheran Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 15 and VFW Post 628. He enjoyed writing poetry and telling or hearing a good joke, especially when a Norwegian was involved. His love of music was evidenced in his 50 years of playing bass with a number of orchestras throughout the region, including the Dakota Serenaders, the Swingsters, Merle and his Helpers and the Pete Erickson Band. If it was a good polka or any "old time" number, Lawrence was either playing it or listening to it. Grateful for having shared his life are his sister-in-law, Han Schjodt, Sioux Falls, SD; eleven nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, on January 28, 1999; his parents; his aunt, Borghild Schjodt; and two brothers, Glynn and Edwin. Lawrence's family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful, loving staff at Greenleaf Senior Housing for the outstanding care they provided to him during the past two years.
