For some days it was thought he would lose one eye and probably affect the other but good news has been received and the doctors think he will not lose his eyesight. >The Ashland Citizen, November 17, 1928, p2. Lawrence Hughes returned from Boston last Saturday. He has lost the sight of one eye at present and he states the doctor gave him small hope for further use of the eye. Lawrence Polly as the buys know him has a host of friends and is a member of the Hook and Ladder Co. A.F.D., and everyone feels sorry for him because of this trouble. >The Ashland Citizen, November 24, 1928, p2. The first picture shows my father in the midst of some of his radio equipment. He always loved his Halicrafter SX-62 shortwave set and tape recording classical music from the radio. On occasion he would use the microphone and record us when we were talking. That was his spot after a days work. My mother called this spot his "Glory Hole." When I started my gardening as a teenager, I had a real nice garden out back of the house. One evening my father came in to report that I had a cucumber ready to pick. Wow, I raced out back to get it. But wait, something's amiss. I retrieved the cuke and brought it into the house and gave it to him and said, "The next time you put a cucumber in my garden, don't put in in with the squash vines!" Lawrence Hughes, Sr., 66 died at his home. He was a native of this town and an electrician for 32 years at L. W. Packard, Co. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Gladys Hughes, five sons, Wayne, Richard and Bernard of Ashland, Lawrence Hughes, Jr. and Ronald of Concord; two daughters, Mrs Charlotte Kelleher of Maynard, Massachusetts. and Mrs. Kathleen Cilley of Ashland; fifteen grandchildren and a great-grandchild; three brothers, Elmer C. and Melville Hughes of Ashland and Francis Hughes of Hopkinton, Massachusetts; and a sister, Mrs Martha Hancock of Los Angeles. Services will be held at the Dupuis Funeral Home Friday afternoon with Rev. David Stoddard of St Mark's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in the Green Grove Cemetery.
