Read More	Boone County Democrat January 1908 This city has witnessed an unusual and inspiring spectacle within the past week in the death and burial in one grave yesterday afternoon of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wahl, two of our most highly respected and honored pioneer residents. Had they lived until the first of next March they would have been married fifty five years. It is a most beautiful sight to see a husband and wife who have pledged their troth to each other in the full flush of young manhood and womanhood, have weathered life's storms, shared its joys and borne it sorrows together, met and answered promptly every stern call to duty, reared a noble family and then going happily hand in hand, down the western slope together, in the full enjoyment of the love and esteem of all who know them, to rest peacefully in the same grave, as Mr. and Mrs. Wahl have done. Both had enjoyed unusually good health until the Saturday following Christmas, when they were taken down by severe cold, which developed into the grip and later into pneumonia. They grew rapidly worse and the family soon realized that the end was near. Mr. Wahl passed peacefully away at 9:00 o'clock Friday morning, Jan 10th. Mrs. Wahl was very low at the time but lingered until Tuesday night, Jan. 14th., when she too answered the last call and passed to the vast beyond. Lawrence Wahl was born in Alsace, France, (now Germany) Jan. 11, 1826 and would have been 82 years old the day following his death. His father died in France in 1884, leaving a wife and three sons. They came to America, when Lawrence, who was second son, was fourteen years old and settled in Muskingum County, Ohio, where he assisted his mother in assuming the responsibilities of the family. On March 1, 1853, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Miller in Ohio and in the same year came with his wife and mother to Boone County where he has ever since resided. His mother made her home with him until her death, which occurred June 29th, 1867. The younger brother Philip, died in Ohio, June 23, 1904, aged 75 years, and Frederick, the older brother, died in Boone, May 26, 1905, aged 80 years, leaving him the only surviving member of his family. After coming to Boone County he settled on a farm about three miles north of Boone, where they underwent all the hardships and vicissitudes incident to pioneer life in a new country and where their noble character and generous dispositions won for them the highest esteem and affection of all with whom they came in contact. Several years ago, having by strict integrity and frugality acquired a competence, they left the farm and settled down in Boone to spend their declining years in well-earned peace and comfort. Margaret Miller was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, April 4, 1823 and died at her home in Boone, Iowa, Jan. 14, 1908, aged 84 years, 9 months and 10 days. She was converted at the age of 25 and joined the M.E. Church and has lived a faithful and consistent Christian life. She was true to her duties as wife and mother "And her children rise up and call her blessed." She was married as stated above, to Lawrence Wahl March 11, 1853. Theirs was a happy union and journeyed together. It was the wish of each that they might not be long separated and God in His mercy has granted their desire. Mr. Wahl lived a faithful Christian life, never losing an opportunity of ministering to the needy. He was a devoted husband, a tender loving father, a kind neighbor and an upright and worthy citizen. Mr. and Mrs. Wahl were the parents of six children one whom, William H., died at the age of nine years. Four daughters, Mary D. Scott of Kiona, Washington, Amelia M. Doran of Ontario, Iowa, Emma E. Wheeler of Sioux City, Iowa and Laura D. at home and one son, Lawrence M. Wahl of Boone, survive to mourn the death of loving and devoted father and mother, and to them is given the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sad double bereavement. The children were all present at the funeral. The funeral services for both were held from the first M.E. Church at 1:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. A.H. Collins, assisted by the Rev. O.H.L. Mason, and attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Beautiful and appreciated music was provided for the occasion and many beautiful floral tributes attested the general esteem in which they were held by their countless friends. The remains were taken to the Bass Point cemetery where they were interred in the same grave. N. Wahl, of Boone, Iowa sends this office an account of the death of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wahl, who will be remembered by some of the older readers of the Register for they were former residents of this county. The were both in very good health until the Saturday following Christmas when they contracted colds which developed into the grip and caused their death. Mr. Wahl died January 10th at the age of 82 years and his wife January 14 at the age of 84 years. They had been married nearly 55 years. They had a family of six children one of whom preceded them to the grave. They were pioneer settlers of Boone County, Iowa. They were devoted Christians and their lives were useful ones in the community in which they lived. A Boone paper say of them: Their's was a happy union and for almost fifty-five years they have journeyed together. It was the wish of each that they might not be separated and God in his mercy has granted their desire. They were both buried in one grave January 16th.
