He was born on the family farm near Woodworth, North Dakota, October 24, 1928 to Henry and Pauline (Wutzke) Cellmer, the third of six children. In 1939, the family moved to Edgar, Montana where Lawrence graduated from high school. At an early age, Lawrence showed an aptitude for auto mechanics, and began working for nearby farmers and ranchers. On August 27, 1949, Lawrence and Jean Coakley were married in Billings, Montana. The couple lived in Laurel, Montana where Lawrence worked for Great Northern Pacific RR, in the car shops. He entered the Army in 1953, attending boot camp at Camp Roberts in California. He was deployed to Germany, lastly at Berlin, where his son, Steven, was born. The family returned to Montana in 1955. Lawrence worked and lived with Jean and family on the Coakley ranch northwest of Billings. In 1956, they were gifted with the birth of their daughter, Mary. Over the years, they added land and angus cattle to the enterprise. Early on, Lawrence also worked at Great Western Sugar in Billings maintaining the boilers at the factory. Lawrence was an avid reader of all ag related literature, guiding his decisions regarding crops and cattle. He was most content while driving “Big John”, his four-wheel drive John Deere tractor. Lawrence also enjoyed attending sporting events of his children, nieces and nephews, as well as dancing the night away at community dances. Lawrence was an attentive, devoted husband and father; loved by many, admired by most. Lawrence is preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents Pauline and Henry; sisters Dorothy Stocks and Aliene Cooper; brothers Maynard, Jarel, and Don. He is survived by his children Mary Pednault (Cliff) and Steve (Monica) Cellmer; sister-in-law Doris Parker; brother-in-law Ray Cooper (Ronan, MT); numerous nieces and nephews; six step-grandchildren and oodles of step-greatgrandchildren. Visitation is scheduled from 6-8PM, Wednesday, November 11, at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West, Billings, MT. A private service (due to Covid restrictions) will be held at Yellowstone National Cemetery, Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 2PM. In the spring of 2021, a celebration of Lawrence’s life will be held.
