He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF. A security team on a road sweep north along Highway 1 towards the Hai Van Pass in Hoa Van District were ambushed by the enemy.
