Funeral services were held at Grace Episcopal Church Oct. 22 with Bishop James Krotz officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery. Leah Marie Hartman was born Leah Marie Crabtree on Dec. 21, 1926 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Her parents, Orville and Edith Crabtree, moved the family to Lincoln soon thereafter. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1944 followed by graduation from Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She met and married Bill C. Hartman in 1948. After several moves, the family eventually settled in Chadron, where Leah worked at Chadron Community Hospital for many years. The couple later owned the Erlewine-Hartman Funeral Home in Chadron from 1970 to 1980. She was an active - and dynamic - member of Grace Episcopal Church where she spent many years serving on the Altar Guild. Her friends remember Leah as "the first one at your door when you needed someone close; she was always there for us." She volunteered in many civic organizations including Meals on Wheels, the Children's Immunization Clinic since its inception in 1979, and took patients from Crest View Nursing Home on day trips. Leah was an avid reader and staunch fan of the Denver Broncos, especially John Elway; she rarely missed a televised game. But days playing Bridge with her friends was her passion. They all said that "Leah had the ability to gather four to eight friends together - willingly - for bridge with a quick phone call - and could make it happen on a moment's notice." For many years she instigated a gathering of her widow lady friends for New Years Eve. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend; a close and welcoming neighbor. Leah lifted spirits with her presence, her expressive smiles, and cheerful outlook. Leah is survived by: daughter Kathy and husband Austin Page, California City, Calif.; son Robert and wife Krystyn, Rawlins, Wyo.; daughter Sue and husband Jim Petracek, Lincoln; daughter Nanci and friend Andrew Scherbarth, Chadron, six grandchildren; a great-grandson; her sister Ruth and husband Dick Finnigsmier; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband Bill. The Chadron Record
