Dear Friends of The Sabetha Herald: It is with sadness that I write to inform you that The Sabetha Herald has just lost one of its best readers and supporters of your paper. My mother, Mrs. Melvin H. Ewing (Leah N. Battin) passed away on March 9, 1975, at The Santa Monica Hospital in Santa Monica, California. She was taken there on March 2nd after a coronary where she was a heart patient until her death. Mother and Dad (Mr. and Mrs. Melvin H. Ewing moved into the Brentwood Manor Retirement Home in West Los Angeles in April of '74 after selling their home at 2475 Colby Avenue where they had lived in the Santa Monica area for 30 years. Mr. and Mrs. Ewing would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in a few weeks, March 29. Mrs. Leah N. Ewing was born February 22, 1892 in Capioma, Kansas. Services were held in Santa Monica Chapel on Tuesday, March 11, 1975, at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Milton Weishaar of the First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica officiating. Services were held March 17 at the Popkess Funeral Home in Sabetha with inurnment following in the Sabetha Cemetery. Mrs. Ewing leaves to grieve her passing her husband, Melvin H. Ewing, Mrs. Forrest (Laurel) Ralston of Topeka, Kansas, Mrs. Louis (Doris) Noel of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Mrs. Robert (Maxine) Rathbone of Silver Spring, Md., M. Keith Ewing of Rockville, Md., and a son-in-law, Mr. Basil Bybee, also of West Los Angeles, Cal.; also 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Three children preceded Mrs. Ewing in death. One, Mrs. Basil (Melba H.) Bybee, passed away on July 16, 1974 in Santa Monica. The Ewings were long time residents of Sabetha. My father had his own automobile business there for many years and he and Mother retired to West Los Angeles in 1943. My parents raised their family in Sabetha, where Mother was especially active in the Methodist Church and The Women's Club. They made many trips back to Sabetha and there many friends there. They wished many times to return, but their health would not permit it. Mother being such a reader of your paper, would have liked something relative to this life in it. Thank you so very much.
