From the September 24, 1908 Skidmore New Era, page 1: "Leander J. Pope was born in Grayson county, Virginia, July 22, 1838. He came to Missouri in the spring of 1865 and settled in Nodaway county near Graham, where he has lived all the time with the exception of nine years at Battle Creek, Nebraska. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Smock November 6, 1870. To this union were born seven children, all of whom are living and married. They are, Mrs. Lee Teson of Skidmore, Jasper L. of Battle Creek, Nebraska, Harvey of Barnard, Missouri, Mrs. Bertha Osborn of Battle Creek, Nebraska, Mrs. Martha Sewell of Gregory, South Dakota, Charley and Raymond of Skidmore. L. J. Pope was one of the oldest and best citizens of Nodaway county; he was an honest, hardworking man; he was a man of good judgement; through his ability and energy, he has accumulated considerable wealth. He owned large farms both in Missouri and Nebraska. Brother Pope was converted and united with the Baptist church, forty years ago. His life was not without its faults and imperfections, yet he was tender hearted and sympathetic. He enjoyed his religion and loved his Savior. He was ever ready to give good advice and lend a helping hand. He wanted to see his children do well and he tried hard to raise them right. He has been a constant sufferer from a complication of diseases for several years. On Sunday morning, September 13, the Lord said unto him, 'It is enough, come up higher,' so he left his beautiful little home and family here and went to dwell with his Lord and those loved ones gone on before. Many will miss him here, but none will miss him quite so much as his kind and loving wife who has been his companion and helpmate for nearly forty years, who has shared his joys and sorrows. The funeral was held from the Graham Baptist church at 2 p.m. Monday, September 14, conducted by Rev. R. C. Miller, his former pastor, assisted by Rev. MaGill, the present pastor. The large crowd present shows that the deceased was held in high esteem in his own neighborhood."
