"He died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1993, of liver and prostate cancer, his family said. "Garner was born at Enloe Hospital June 2, 1919, into one of the North Valley's founding families. He graduated from Chico High in 1939. "He engaged in several occupations in addition to raising cattle, almonds and walnuts, including custom grain harvesting, land leveling and truck driving. "Garner also joined the operating engineers local and drove heavy equipment, working on Oroville Dam, Interstate 5 and other projects before retiring in 1982. "He was active in the community and belonged to the Grange for 60 years, serving as Durham Grange Master for at least 15 years. He was instrumental in remodeling Durham Grange Hall, including helping raise money to finance the project. "At age 50 he earned his private pilot's license. He became a member of the Civil Air Patrol and flew on search and rescue missions. Garner also belonged to Sons In Retirement in Chico, Companions of the Forest and Toastmasters. "He donated more than 16 gallons of blood at the Chico blood bank. "At age 60 he bought a motorcycle, and he also flew his plane regularly until he fell ill a year ago. One of his greatest joys was getting up at 6 a.m. each day to join friends at Jack's Restaurant for coffee. "When Garner was 72, he exchanged wedding vows with his wife Rose at the Taylorsville Grange Hall on the 4th of July. "He is survived by Rose, of Durham; daughters Leana Garner of Sacramento and Leila Giles of Winterset, Iowa; stepdaughters Linda Williams of Oroville and Gail Williams of Paradise; sons Richard of Red Bluff, Jack of San Pablo, Frank Stephens of Mabton, Wash. and Jeff Nelson of Sacramento; sister Una Merrifield of Carmichael; brothers Earl of Oroville and Jay of Chico; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. "Serving as pallbearers at the funeral will be Scott Carl, Doug Jones, Steve Jones, Dave Stevens, Clayton Kettell and Joe Jugum. "The family wishes all remembrances to be made to either Enloe Hospice or Durham Grange Building Fund, in care of Brusie Funeral Home." ~~~ 74-year-old Lee Elvin Garner was interred, per the Glen Oaks Memorial Park Cemetery Burial Records, in the plot noted, on December 11, 1993.
