Description	:	Lee Wayne Meyer, 73 of New Hartford, Iowa passed away on August 27, 2018, peacefully at home with his family by his side. Lee was born on May 26, 1945 in Des Moines, IA. He was the son of Alfred and Adeline (Schuck) Meyer. He attended school in Aplington and graduated from Aplington High School in 1963. While serving with the US Navy... Read More	Lee Wayne Meyer, 73 of New Hartford, Iowa passed away on August 27, 2018, peacefully at home with his family by his side. Lee was born on May 26, 1945 in Des Moines, IA. He was the son of Alfred and Adeline (Schuck) Meyer. He attended school in Aplington and graduated from Aplington High School in 1963. He attended trade school in Omaha, Nebraska for auto mechanics and then began work in Grundy Center, IA. He joined the US Navy in 1965 and completed boot camp in Pendleton, CA. While serving with the US Navy Seabees, Lee went on to serve two tours in Chi Lai and Dong Ha, Vietnam and later was stationed in Newfoundland, Canada. After an honorary discharge in 1971, Lee and his wife, Catherine (George), and daughter, Wendy settled back in Aplington, where he worked at Frey’s Standard. Lee went on to learn radiator repairs and owned Meyer Radiator and Auto Repair from 1972-1980. While in Aplington, Lee became one of Iowa’s first EMT’s, was active in Boy Scouts, and a member at Aplington Presbyterian Church. On January 6, 1978, Lee married Shary (Souhrada) at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs, Iowa. The couple resided in Aplington until 1980, where they then moved to Santa Maria, California for a short time. Lee then worked in Mason City, IA repairing radiators for the next two years. In 1986, Lee and Shary moved to their present home north of New Hartford. Lee worked a variety of jobs during this time, including driving a bus for de-tassling crews, Ron’s Auto Salvage, and Truex Plumbing and Heating. Lee was a member of the New Hartford American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. Lee had a lifelong passion for racing. In the 1970’s, he raced stock cars in Waterloo, Nashua, Webster City, Boone, and Marshalltown. He often could be found attending sprint car races in Knoxville, IA on a hot summer night. In 1992, he began building go-karts for his son, Chris to drive. This developed into building and racing go carts for the next 26 years. Lee is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shary of New Hartford, two daughters, Wendy Gardner of Millington, TN; Shary Louise and husband, Clark Ebert of Riceville, IA; a son, Chris and wife, Staci Meyer of Cedar Falls, IA, five grandchildren; Amanda and Allysa Gardner, Aidan, Asher, and Arya Ebert, one sister, Nora and husband Paul Frederick of Capistrano Beach, CA. A celebration of life will be held at the home of Lee and Shary at 4:00 pm on Friday, August 31, 2018. The Geyer-Bickner American Legion Post #660 of New Hartford will give military honors following the service. There will be a visitation on Thursday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock. A private burial of cremains will be at West Point Cemetery near Janesville, IA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be used for future scholarships in mechanic or welding field. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock is assisting the family.
