Description	:	Lena Caroline Helwig was born in Sandershausen, Germany, a little village near Berlin, July 13, 1875, and departed this life December 28, 1940, after a prolonged illness. At the age of 13 she came to America with her parents to Omaha, Nebraska, where on July 17, 1892, she was united to Frank J. Kirkhoff of that city. Read More	Lena Caroline Helwig was born in Sandershausen, Germany, a little village near Berlin, July 13, 1875, and departed this life December 28, 1940, after a prolonged illness. At the age of 13 she came to America with her parents to Omaha, Nebraska, where on July 17, 1892, she was united to Frank J. Kirkhoff of that city. Two years later they moved to a farm near Lawrence, Nebraska. After living there four years they moved to a farm six miles north of Edgar, Nebraska. In 1912 they moved to their own farm home two miles west of Edgar. After the death of her husband in 1930, she lived with her children, alternating her time between California and Nebraska. In May, 1939, she came to Nebraska to make her home near Edgar with her two daughters, who cared for her until her death. An infant daughter also preceded her in death, and seven children are left to mourn her loss. They are: Mrs. Minnie Shuck and Mrs. Lillian Shuck of Edgar, Nebraska, Frank C. Kirkhoff of Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Ida Foy of San Pedro, California; Mrs. Mabel Wheeland of Patterson, California; and Mrs. Irene Stephens of Santa Monica, California; and Mrs. Myreta Organ of Anaheim, California; also 19 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters, Mrs. Martin Essinger and Mrs. Fred Sigman of Edgar and Mrs. Matilda Schwieger of Milwaukee, Oregon; one brother, Henry Helwig of Bakersfield, California, and many other relatives and a host of friends. She was brought up in the Protestant faith and in later years joined the Methodist Church at Edgar, Nebraska. She was a kind and loving mother, her greatest concern in life being her family and in giving to others, especially to her children and grandchildren, During her illness of the last three years she was very patient, always grateful for the kindness shown to her by her family and many friends. Funeral services were held Monday, December 30, 1940, at 2:00 p.m., at the Methodist Church with Rev. Raymond Rush in charge. A quartet consisting of Florine Cassell, Genevieve Hungerford, Cecil Strawser and M. E. Cushing sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer," "Rock of Ages" and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." Mrs. Lydia Phelps was at the piano. Pallbearers were: George Thomas, Barney Kollman, C. H. Mills, E.D. Organ, M. E. Cushing and Frank Bishop. Interment was made in the Edgar Cemetery.
