October 4, 2001 ******** Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Friday, January 27, 1922 Mother Follows Daughter Constant Vigil and Unremitting Care Overtaxed Her Strength The home of Henry Meinen, in Preston township, was visited by death on Monday, for the second time within four days. His daughter, Emma died on Friday from malignant scarlet fever. On Monday the wife and mother succumbed to the illness. She contracted infection while nursing her daughter. Worn out with constant vigil and devoted attention to her daughter, her constitution was unable to resist the onslaught of disease. She died as she had lived, wholly engrossed in her love for her husband and children, to whom she absolutely devoted all her energies and care, and for whom no sacrifice was too great. The names of such women are written in the book of life and the manner of her death was in accordance with the christian virtues she had practiced and taught during her useful life of fifty years. Lena Flora Nannen was born at Schoortens, Oldenburg, Germany, on March 22, 1871. When seven years of age she lost her mother. When she was ten years old she came with he father, the late John Nannen, to America, the family coming directly to Le Mars and locating in Preston township. Lena Nannen attended country school and assisted in the work of the farm and the household and early acquired habits of thrift and industry. In 1889 she was united in marriage with Henry Meinen and they took up their home on a farm in Preston township, where they have prospered, gaining a competence, and happy in their work and the rearing of a family, the members of which added joy and happiness to their well spent lives. To Mr. and Mrs. Meinen six children were born. Five children with the father mourn the death of a devoted mother. Hermann, Alfred and Alma live at home and two daughters Mrs. Ernest Frerichs and Mrs. Henry Tapper live in the near neighborhood. Mrs. Meinen is also survived by a brother, Henry Nannen and a sister, Mrs. Fred Haage and two half sisters, Mrs. Harm Kruse, and Mrs. Dick Frerichs, all of Plymouth county. Fritz Luken, of this city, is a cousin of the deceased and knew her all her life. The funeral which was held on Wednesday from the house, was strictly private, owing to the nature of the disease which proved fatal. Rev. Theo. Meyer, of the Preston Lutheran church paid a fitting tribute to the memory of a good christian woman.
