Lambert and Harriett Borley Lambert. She passed from this life on the morning of August 31, 1948 at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital. She was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on May 19, I893 in Lamoni where she had come in her childhood and where she was to spend most of her life. Her father was loved and respected as superintendent of schools in Lamoni as a member of the first Board of Trustees of Graceland College and as the editor of the Independent Patriot in Lamoni. It was there that she was married to Charles P. Graham on July 11, 1912. They lived in Minot, N. Dak., from 1912 to 1916 where the husband was interested in farming and was a partner in a department store. In 1916, they returned to Lamoni where Mr. Graham accepted a position as manager of the telephone company and filled the remainder of a term as mayor following the death of his predecessor. It was while he was engaged in his work as mayor that he was killed in an accident involving an automobile and a railway train, July 3, 1917. After this tragedy, Mrs. Graham devoted her time to the support and education of her only child, Kenneth L. Graham. Her education through the high school years had been received in the Lamoni schools. She was a member of the first regular class to be enrolled at Graceland College in 1895 and was graduated four years later. After that, she won a degree from the Soper School of Oratory in Chicago, did professional work in elocution, and taught at Graceland College from 1910 to 1912. In the years from 1919 to 1933, she was the local editor of the Lamoni Chronicle and represented several national news services. In 1935 she went to Lawrence Kans., to make a home for her son during his university years. After his graduation in 1937, she moved to Kansas City living there until 1939 when she came to Independence. In many ways, this began a period of her finest and happiest years. Her son was established in business, and though she kept her own home, she was a beloved companion and helper to the two grandchildren who meant so much to her. Always finding happiness and activity in the company of the many-relatives she found here, she helped arrange the Lambert Family Reunion Association, and promoted the Lambert Cousins' Club. She gave much time to church work, to the Women's Department, and to visiting the sick and shut-ins on her own initiative. She regularly attended group meetings. She had prepared many packages to be sent to needy families in Europe, and her last concern was to complete a shipment interrupted by her final illness. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. V. L. Knacker of Miami, Okla. Her survivors are her son, Kenneth L. Graham, of Independence, and two grandchildren, Donis Jean Graham and Karen Louise Graham. Never having had a daughter of her own, she took her son's wife into her affections and loved her deeply. All her life, she fought without complaint the illness which finally helped bring the end. She lived bravely, devoted to her duty, to her family, her church, and her friends. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Cornell, of Minot, N. Dak.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stevenson, Nauvoo, Ill.; and Mrs. Sue Goknoton, Seattle. Wash. Those from Independence, Mo., were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth L. Graham, Miss Florence Stevenson, Mrs. Maude Mills, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Lambert, Mrs. Earl Redfield, Mrs. Joseph Petri, J. Orrin Moon, Stanley Pike, Mrs. Nelle 0. LENA GRAHAM DIED TUESDAY; FUNERAL HERE. Mrs. Lena Graham, long-time resident of Lamoni and a member of the first class enrolled at Graceland College, died Tuesday morning at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital. Mrs. Graham was 69 years old and had been hospitalized only a short time before her death. Two funeral services will be held. The first will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Stahl funeral chapel in Independence, Mo. John Garver will conduct the service The second will be conducted by Dr. Roy A. ChevIlle at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Marsh chapel In Lamoni. Mrs. Graham was born at Sioux City, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel F. Lambert. She moved to Lamoni as a child where her father served on the first board of trustees of Graceland College and as superintendent of public schools. She was married to Charles F. Graham who was In business in Lamoni. Mr. Graham was serving as mayor when he was killed at a grade crossing in 1911. Mrs. Graham lived in Lamoni until 1935 with the exception of the years between 1912 and 1915 when she moved to Minot, N. D. where her husband was engaged in business. In 1935 she went with her son, Kenneth, to Lawrence, Kans., while he finished work on his degree. From there she moved to Kansas City and finally to Independence, Mo. Mrs. Graham held a degree in dramatics and speech and taught at Graceland College. She was local editor on the Lamoni Chronicle for about 13 years and had worked previously on the Independent Patriot, a newspaper published by her father. While living in Independence she was known for her activity in the women's department of the Stone Church. She is survived by one son, Kenneth Graham, 614 North Delaware street, Independence, manager of the Herald Publishing House, and two grandchildren, Donnis Jean and Karen Louise Graham.
