Lena celebrated her 100th birthday last week with a gathering of relatives and friends. She was born on May 8, 1892 in Luxemburg, Iowa to Margaret (Bries) and Peter Welter. Lena was the youngest of eight children, joining four brothers and three sisters. Lena attended a Catholic school in Luxemburg for about six years. After school she helped at home and with the farm work, including picking corn. On Jan. 24, 1922 Lena married Bernard Nieland at Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg. They had three sons and two daughters. One son died in infancy. The Nielands moved to Garnavillo to farm. Bernard passed away in 1959. Lena has 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Lena came to live at the Guttenberg Care Center on March 5, 1987. She enjoys playing cards and bingo, watching television, attending church and visiting with her many friends and relatives. +++ Guttenberg Press, IA, Wednesday, July 1, 1992, pg. 8, col. 4 Services held for Lena Nieland, 100 Services for Mrs. Lena Nieland, 100, of Guttenberg were conducted by Father Paul Peters at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 29, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Mrs. Nieland died Thursday, June 25, 1992 at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Garnavillo, with the following casket bearers: Dennis, Mike, Kyle, Jeff and Gene Nieland and Harold Nuehring. Honorary bearers were Don, Dean, Bob, David and Rick Nieland and Chuck Lake. Visitation was at the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home where the scripture wake service was held Sunday evening. Lena Magdalene Nieland was born in Luxemburg on May 8, 1892, a daughter of Peter and Margaret (Bried) Welter. She was married Jan. 24, 1922 at Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg to Bernard "Ben" Nieland Jr., who died Aug. 1, 1959. Mrs. Nieland was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary Church. She is survived by two sons, LaVern (and Coletta) of Guttenberg and Raymond of Hazel Green, Wis.; two daughters, Mrs. Armella Nuehring of Guttenberg and Mrs. Gordon (Rosemary) Neumann of Dubuque; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Elmer in 1988 and Harold in infancy; three brothers, John, Pete and Matt; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary (John) Strangel and Mrs. Kate (John) Steffen. +++ Clayton County Register, IA, Wednesday, July 8, 1992, pg. 8, col. 2 LENA MAGDALENE NIELAND Funeral services for Lena Magdalene Nieland, 100, Guttenberg, were held Monday, June 29, 1992, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg. Father Paul Peters officiated the service with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Garnavillo. Pallbearers were Dennis, Mike, Kyle, Jeff and Gene Nieland and Harold Nuehring.
