Read More	SMITH, LEO—Leo Smith was born in Pawnee City and at the age of ten, his family moved to Liberty. By the age of 12, he showed a great interest in electronics and built his own short wave crystal set. This adeptness for electronics started early and remained with him the rest of his life. His father owned a general store and Leo helped him with the business. IN fact, he was such an industrious young man, he persuaded his dad to let him have a small part of the store to start his own enterprise, a radio repair shop In 1930, at the age of 16, he graduated from Liberty High School and continued on to Doane College. He returned to Liberty and opened his own store. He decided movies would be a good way to attract more people to the town, so he formed a Civic Community Club, got the people’s backing, offered to run the projector and introduced Liberty to the great Saturday night open air movies. When the weather became inclement, they asked him to move the projector into the opera house and continue the Saturday night movies. Leo was inducted into the Signal corps of the Army in 1941. After his basic training in Chicago, Ill., he was sent to Fresno, Cal., to radio school. Unfortunately, because of a serious arthritic condition, he was discharged before he could finish his schooling. He returned to the radio business in Geneva, where he met and married Margaret Kiester Parker. In 1945 they moved to Central City and expanded his radio business to include all kinds of appliances. In 1973, Leo and Margaret retired from the business and in 1978 built a home in Geneva. Leo was a respected businessman, not only because of his good business sense, but also for his community concerns. He was a very active member of the United Methodist Church, both in Central City and in Geneva. All who knew him never doubted that here was a man who followed his Lord. Leo was a kind, loving and benevolent person and will be greatly missed. He died at his home in Geneva on Tuesday, June 20, 1989, aged 75. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a brother, Richard and his wife, Lydia, of Omaha, several nephews and nieces and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Thursday, June 22, with the Rev. Cal Leeds officiating. Mrs. Norval Lomax accompanied Kelly Eich, who sang “Precious Memories” and “In the Garden.” Those serving as pallbearers were Rod Barney, Craig Lefever, Rodney Hartman, Don Hansen, Don Anderson and Larry Larson.
