Read More	Newton Kansan, Friday, October 8, 2010 Leo Bartley "L.B." McGee, died Saturday (Oct. 2, 2010) at the home of his daughter in League City, Texas. L.B. was born on Sept. 22, 1928, in Newton to Luther Bartley and Bertha Jane (Parker) McGee. After graduation, L.B. joined the Marines, returning to Newton upon his discharge. On June 11, 1950, he married Beverly Joe Schmidt in Newton. He received his engineering and masters of science degrees from Tulsa University and UCLA. In 1958, he and his family, now with a daughter, moved to South America where Leo built a tracking station to track the Russian satellite "Sputnik." While there, he also accepted a job with NASA, and after spending eight and a half years in South America, he was transferred to Washington, D.C., and was appointed to oversee all tracking stations worldwide. He was honored to have designed the electrical system for the space shuttle Columbia. In 1981, Leo assumed the position of an aerospace engineer at Johnson Space Center in Houston. He retired in 1996. He will be missed by his wife, Beverly; daughter, Dana Hickey; and grandsons, Joel and Kevin Hickey. Leo will be remembered as a happy-go-lucky man who loved to whistle and sing and saw good in everything. Although he had not lived in Newton since 1950, he loved his family, and it was his wish to return there to rest in peace with them in Greenwood Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Estella Perry; and brother, Ival. A military graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Greenwood Cemetery, at the far north end. Following the service, visitation with the family will be in the private room at Charlie's Restaurant. No meal will be served. All friends and family are invited.
