OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, September 25, 2001 FOSTER Leo Everett Foster was born February 17, 1928 in rural Lucas County to Theodore and Lila Hall Foster. Leo passed away September 13, 2001 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from complications of Alzheimer's at the age of 73 years. Leo attended country school in Lucas County and graduated from Chariton High School in 1946. After graduation he served his country by entering the United States Navy during World War II. He retired in 1987 after 36 years working as a linesman and engineer for Contel. Leo belonged to the Iowa Telephone Pioneers Association, board member of the Lucas County Historical Society, Chariton Volunteer Fire Department, and the Masonic Lodge Number 63 and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He was an avid outdoors man and loved spending his free time hunting and fishing. Leo married Wanda Nichols in December of 1947 and they were blessed with three children: Terry, Stephen and Christine, who died as an infant. He was married to Cleone Hamann and they were blessed with a daughter Mary. He was married to Bernadette Debok on July 13, 1979. The last few years Leo has been on a long journey battling Alzheimer's disease. He will be missed by all those who loved and cared for him, but who are happy that he is now at peace. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Christine, a sister Virginia McDonald, and a brother Ted Foster. Leo is survived by his children: Terry Sellers and husband Bruce of Chariton, Mary Meyer and husband Jim of Mesa, Ariz., and Stephen Foster of Chariton. Four granddaughters: Heather Woody of Cedar Falls, Maggie Sellers of Marion, and Trevor and Tricia Foster. Three sisters: Betty Jeffords of Des Moines, Phyllis Kennedy of Chula Vista, Calif., and Lola Weeks of Firestone, Colo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001 at the Disciples of Christ Christian Church in Chariton with Rev. Jim Roberson conducting the service and Mrs. Gloria Willis providing the music. Pallbearers were Jerry McVey, Ron Chapman, Jim Hazelwood, Ed Tighe, Time Jeffords and Dick Threlkeld. Honorary Pallbearers were Steve Carver, Weston Laing, Jerry Wells, Robert Hazelwood and Paul "Tiny" Engebretson. Interment was in the Zion Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Chariton Volunteer Fire Department or to The Alzheimer's Association. Pierschbacher Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
