Description	:	Leon Alvin Jorgensen was born June 1, 1919, to Chris and Marie (Lauridsen) Jorgensen on a farm near Viborg, South Dakota. He was the second of seven children. He went to meet his heavenly father on March 23, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Village Nursing Home, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, having reached the age of 88 years. He went to meet his heavenly father on March 23, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Village Nursing Home, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, having reached the age of 88 years. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Viborg. He received his education at the Viborg Public School. From December 1941 to December 1945, Leon served as a Carpenter's Mate First Class in the U. S. Navy. September 12, 1948 he married Cleo Kaufman at the Salem Mennonite Church with Rev. Willard Klaussen officiating. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on September 12, 2008. To this union were born three children: June Nancy, Brenda, and Cynthia. They enjoyed farming for 48 years and they remained on the farm an additional seven years after his retirement. He loved nature and was always trying to take care of the Earth's natural resources, especially trees and water. His love of trees led him to the hobby of woodworking. He spent hours in the basement of his house working on wooden tractors, trucks, and other projects. He was active in many different organizations including serving 40 years as a Turner County District Soil Conservation Supervisor, Turner County Weed board member, Turkey Ridge Watershed Board, and the Southeastern South Dakota Experimental Farm in Beresford where he served on the board for many years. He was a member and active in the Freeman Lions Club. Leon was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Viborg, South Dakota until he transferred his membership to the Salem Mennonite Church of Freeman, South Dakota where he remained a faithful member. There he served as an usher, trustee, and enjoyed teaching Sunday School for many years. Leon and Cleo loved golfing, playing cards with friends, being outdoors, and traveling. They traveled a great deal after their retirement. Some memorable trips included the Panama Canal, a bus tour of the Northeastern states, Bahamas cruise, and a trip to Hawaii with Brenda and her family. Leon visited all 50 states except Alaska. The grandchildren loved to go to Grandpa's farm. The boys always wanted to ride on the tractor. Every Christmas was spent at the farm and the grandkids were always excited to see what Grandpa had made for them. Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are his wife Cleo; his two daughters and spouses: Brenda and Craig Gust of Maple Grove, Minnesota and Cindy and Leland Aman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six grandchildren: Tiffany and fiancé Max Duque, Amber, and Ryan Gust, Courtney, Kelsey, and Ashton (Lea), and one future great-grandchild; sisters: Annabeth Loe of Ventura, California, and Evelyn Jensen of Viborg, South Dakota; two brothers: Waldo of Hurley, South Dakota, and Kenneth of Yankton, South Dakota.
