Matter, 72, a former resident of Colony, died Sunday [24 November 1963] at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. Born at Comfort, Tex., Mr. Matter moved to Colony with his parents when he was a child, and he grew up in the Colony community. In 1916 he moved to Broadus, Montana, where he homesteaded and operated a cattle ranch for many years. In 1955 he retired and moved to Lawrence. Mr. Matter was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Masonic Lodge at Colony, a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Methodist Church at Colony. In 1950 he married Mrs. Mildred Willis of Iola. Survivors include the widow of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Conners of San Jose, Calif.; a step-son, Max Willis of Iola; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Adams and Mrs. Jess Wilson, both of Colony; and a brother, N. P. Matter of Colony. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday [27 November 1963] at the Waugh Funeral Home with the Rev. E. E. Tillotson officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
