She was born March 3, 1902, near Moran, the daughter of William and Sarah E. Busley Higgins. She grew up near Moran and graduated from Moran High School. she taught school at a number of rural schools in Allen County and worked as a salesman for Edmiston's Department Store. Read More	IOLA REGISTER, September 13, 2000 Mildred E. Matter Mildred E. Matter. 98. died Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Windsor Place in Iola. She was born March 3, 1902, near Moran, the daughter of William and Sarah E. Busley Higgins. She grew up near Moran and graduated from Moran High School. she taught school at a number of rural schools in Allen County and worked as a salesman for Edmiston's Department Store. She married William Lee Willis on June 17, 1928. They later divorced. In 1950 she married Leon A. Matter and they made their home on a ranch in Montana. They later moved to Lawrence, where she sold real estate. Mr. Matter died in 1963, and Mrs. Matter returned to Iola. She worked as a receptionist for Dr. Lyle Schmaus until her retirement. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Allen County Hospital auxiliary and Kansas Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by a son, Max Willis, and his wife, Joan of Iola, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A sister Marie Higgins, died earlier and a brother died in infancy. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial chapel in Iola, the Rev. John C. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Iola. A memorial fund has been established for the Wesley United Methodist church.
