Leon Downie Jay, 58, Waverly physician and surgeon, and former Bremer county coroner, died Sunday in a hospital at Arlington, Va., following a stroke suffered early that day at the home of a daughter, Mrs. William B. Mooney, where Dr. and Mrs. Jay were visiting. Leon Downie Jay, 58, Waverly physician and surgeon, and former Bremer county coroner, died Sunday in a hospital at Arlington, Va., following a stroke suffered early that day at the home of a daughter, Mrs. William B. Mooney, where Dr. and Mrs. Jay were visiting. They had just concluded a two weeks visit with another daughter and her husband, Lt. and Mrs. Vincent Carstensen, at Long Island, before going to Arlington. Mrs. Mooney and Mrs. Carstensen are twins. Fellow of ACS. Dr. Jay was a member of the staff of St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital here, member of the Bremer county and Iowa societies of the American Medical association, Iowa Urological society, fellow of the American College of Surgeons, member of the Iowa Historical society, Tyrrell lodge, AFAM, order of the Shrine at Cedar Rapids, and of the local Chamber of Commerce and the Methodist church. He was born at Gowrie, Sept. 19 1885, the son of Oscar and Elizabeth Downie Jay. His father died when he was 6 and his mother in 1928. He attended Gowrie schools and graduated from Jefferson high school. Dr. Jay received his medical degree from the University of Iowa college of medicine in 1910 and took graduate work in the New York Polyclinic. In 1930 he received a certificate from the Western Infirmary at Glasgow, Scotland. To Waverly in 1925. He began practicing medicine at Plainfield in 1910, remaining there until 1925, when he came to Waverly. Dr. Jay married Miss Edna Kern June 20, 1911, at Iowa City. Surviving besides his widow and twin daughters are another daughter, Mrs. Merle Gruben, Waverly, and a brother, Frank Jay, Council Bluffs. A son died in infancy and a sister, Grace Jay, also preceded him. The body will arrive in Waverly Wednesday night. - contributor TwoRoos -
