Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton, NE with the Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial of his ashes will be at a later date. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton. Gobel age 84 of Crofton, Nebraska died at his residence on Sunday, December 28, 2014 in Crofton. Leon Earl Gobel was born on September 22, 1930 in rural Crofton, NE to Roy and Frances (Kollars) Gobel. He grew up in Crofton and then moved to Oregon with his family. The Gobel family moved back to Crofton. Leon served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed at Big Delta in Alaska. He married Geraldine A. Kremer on June 26, 1952 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance, NE. After Leon returned from Alaska, he and Geri moved to Cherokee, Iowa where he worked for a farmer and then farmed on his own. They moved to Bloomfield, NE in 1960 and continued to farm there until 1989. Leon also milked cows during those years. He then worked for Michael Foods in Bloomfield prior to working for Gurney's Seed and Nursery in Yankton. His last employment up until this fall was for the State of Nebraska Parks as a groundskeeper at Weigand area by the lake. He worked there for ten years. Leon was a former member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Bloomfield, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Crofton, Crofton American Legion Post 128. He was considered the "county historian", loved fishing, fireworks, bird watching, horses, the saddle club, and just being in nature and the outdoors. Leon liked fun with a little element of danger. He was also a bathroom window garden sniper! Leon is survived by his wife, Geri of Crofton; four children and spouses Christine and Michael Carlow of Crofton, Craig and Cheri Gobel of Azle, TX, Douglas and Renee Gobel of Plainview, NE, Charity and Dwayne Schantz of Fordyce; 12 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers Nile Gobel of Portland, Oregon, Ned and wife Dianna Gobel of Crofton; sister Audrey and husband Don Sutton of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers Renee, Alton, Sidney, Timothy, and Ronald Gobel; sisters-in-law Verona Gobel, Elaine Gobel; great granddaughter Anyssa Jo Holland.
