Description	:	Leon J. McGarry, 83, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Monday, June 21, 2021, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with a Vigil Service at 2:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 28, 2021, at the church. Burial will follow at Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Villa Nova, Iowa. Leon John McGarry was born on July 8, 1937, to Leo and Margaret (Lillis) McGarry, in Clinton, Iowa. After graduating from St. Joseph's School in DeWitt, Iowa in 1955, he served in the Navy from 1956 to 1957. Leon farmed from 1957 to the present, including this spring's crop. He was united in marriage to Marianne Wolfe on September 12, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church, Lost Nation. Leon and Marianne raised eight children on the farm northeast of DeWitt. Marianne preceded him in death on February 4, 2013. Leon was a proud farmer, father, and grandfather. He often said, "Family is everything." He was extremely proud of his grandchildren. He loved attending his grandkids' activities, traveling to many states, including California, South Dakota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Most recently, he enjoyed cheering on the St. Joe's Eagles and Central Sabers. Those left to honor his memory include his children, Maureen McGarry (Roger Kinkor) of West Des Moines, Ann Marie Decker of Kansas City, Missouri, Sheila (Joel) Dentlinger of Arcadia, Lisa (Steve) Ash of West Des Moines, Iowa, Leo (Jennifer) McGarry of DeWitt, Erin (Scott) Hardison of East Moline, Illinois, and daughter-in-law Wendy McGarry Jacobsen; 21 grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his wife, Leon was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Leon Joseph, daughter Mary Coleen, son John Leo "Jack," and sisters, Teresa, Geraldine, and Alice. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph School, St. Joseph Education Foundation, or The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Schultz Funeral Homes.
